Five years ago, demonstrators in Chicago outwitted and outfought police officers, winning an opportunity to topple a hated statue of Christopher Columbus. This footage shows the moment when they got the better of police, pinning them down under a hail of cans of LaCroix sparkling water.

Afterwards, the mayor was forced to have the statue removed from the park. It was one of scores of statues of colonizers, Confederates, slaveholders, and other racists removed as a consequence of the spirited demonstrations of summer 2020.
