the shapes of Eurocentrism

I think the self-reckoning, while performatic, is largely perfunctory. by and large the average European still holds beliefs like:

- we here are more advanced / cultured / fully realised as humans than people in the Global South.
- poor people cannot take good care of their own historical art, or fully appreciate it.
- the wealth of Europe is the result of hard work and creativity of Europeans.
- the poverty of poor countries is the result of their backwardness and poor education.
- yes Europeans did bad things in the past but now we're the most progressive and moral people.
- immigrants ought to prove their worth by assimilating and behaving like Europeans.
- it is inconceivable for us to live in conditions of material wealth similar to Third World people / the wealth of Europe must be preserved at all costs.

and even if a liberal can't say these beliefs aloud, sometimes even to themself, their actions still align with Eurocentrism.

roughly, the difference between an Euro right-wing and an Euro left-wing is that the right-wing thinks Europeans deserve their privilege due to their race, even when they won't admit it; while the left-wing thinks Europeans are superior due to their "education and values", even when they won't admit it.

I just debugged some code by realizing my cat had inserted some text in one of the lines. So I decatted the code.

re: anti-autism stuff

@elilla definitely the same origin to the term, just filtered through typical usian ableism towards autistic people, and intersections with other conspiracy theories beliefs that are commonly held.

anti-autism stuff

@elilla the "starseed child" thing is very much alive and well with antivaxxers and other conspiracy people who believe in established alien contact in the United States. I come across it regularly when looking for YTP video editing source material. It has extremely ableist connotations as it is a label conspiratorially minded ET-believer moms will label their autistic kids with instead of being helpful or understanding. To the extent that people on here might find mentioning it a traumatizing thing.

The US and UK tracking and arresting people for political speech is a reminder that even if you're doing nothing wrong, privacy is important

uspol, cynical anarchist viewpoint

Democrats maintained the camps for two presidencies after :gwbush: no questions asked, gave cops bonuses when they rioted and killed, and emboldened the DHS and post-9/11 "national security apparatus".

They are already coaching people over how they just need one more go at giving a fuck about other human beings. As an anarchist I can't say I buy it when the praxis has been lacking the whole time. Maybe they are scared of being called anarchists and communists for opposing white people's racial purges, roundups, and lynchings over the past two decades? So terrible, better do nothing and expect power to return as an inevitability of the damage which won't be repaired.

question for other computer touching educators:

if I have a student who has a project concept that’s way out of their league in terms of required programming skillset, but the student is insistent on doing the project NOW rather than revisiting it later after some time spent skilling up, what are some strategies for assisting the student with their process (while avoiding doing the work for them) and helping them navigate the inevitable crunch-fallout toward the end of the semester?
