just coding in general

Coding without a static type system just feels viscerally like seeing somebody with 99+ browser tabs and having a bookmarks and folders compulsion. Consequent runtime errors and speed tradeoffs aside. It makes me want to write 4x as detailed comments at least, going back to C or C++ or whatever.

I'm the person who makes all the unnecesary and very decorative type annotations where compiler type-inference would have sufficed. I've used emacs art-mode in block comments. Seeing shit written without static typing and vague comments makes me go into feral documentation mode now. It makes me feel like: please join me in this goddamn century, please!

marx antisemitism

@mossfet You can just get the condensed version without the unrelatable discourse if you read Ocalan rambling about the Jews. It basically amounts to tired old europe antisemitic tropes and a sprinkling of philosemitism. Any French guy from the time period would have sounded the exact same, because it is just stupid tropes of the times put lazily to paper.

rambling about the "feel" of our era

Boggles my mind that the most... unpleasant worldview isn't like... some kind of internationalist marxist who is annoying about "the party" and instead it is... you know. Stupid old nationalism not out of place in 1917, etc.

Like... how are we still here? What the fuck happened? I mean I know the by-the-books history but, I didn't live to feel that happen. To feel how we ended up back here ready for the same old shit out of old europe again.

But this leads me to realizing the real depth of that quote where Ursula le Guin is throwing shade at her publishers. About how once the divine right of monarchy must have *felt* inevitable and inescapable. Just how long that era went on... Even endures some places still today...

I don't believe there is some inevitable vector of "progress" or "development", but I think if things do move forward I have a better sense of just how fucking slowly. How it feels through that slow experience, the way it eats at you and those around you.

And a whole new appreciation for the importance of just fucking living free in spite of all of this shit. Of surviving and helping others to as well. We can't live long enough to wait for the world to change in the reformist developmental view of things. But at the same time you can't just leave everybody behind while pursuing that purely as a lifestyle either.

re: Spoilers

@ranja yeah I got to that part last night. Kinda reminds me of how some of my relatives took a long time to not be an asshole about mere queer existence.

Been reading Joe Haldeman's military sci-fi classic "The Forever War". I wish it weren't so apt for the current state of things.

so after being bedridden for 16months due to a hernia, I've finally got my surgery!
now I'm bedridden for recovery, fun!

I'm still about 1400$ away from paying my electricity bill, so if you've got a couple dollars, it'd help me get through this last stretch. Thanks so much!

Meeting the @coopcloud folks (whose software configured this instance 😉) was great fun too. Love to watch a project's maintainers focus on questions like "so how do we get our admins to trust each other?" and "are we making it easy enough to migrate off our tools if something breaks?"

Coming off of seeing (so many) well-intentioned initiatives that confined their conversations to "what's our tech stack" on one end and "how do we get people to become users" on the other, this was a welcome breath of fresh air. 💖

All tech problems are ultimately people problems!

What frogatto and some other games do

@Angle license law has never stopped scumbags anyways, AI or not. It is just for the record in case you get really really fucked over.

Content warning for my latest video:

Dairy.

That is all. Nothing else is wrong with it.

I am going to inflict you with liking my videos @thufiefilms

You will learn the truth.

"There's no way you wrote this yourself, you must have used ChatGPT" is the new "there's no way you wrote this yourself, your husband must have helped you."

What frogatto and some other games do

@Angle Frogatto came up with a solution for this, which some other games do. Basically you can license creative and art assets past some "demo threshold" (end of 1st level, etc) under a different license, or just reserve all rights for them. That way people who want to modify the game can do so, but they can't just republish a barely changed entire retail release, since they need to make the art for the levels past a certain point.

So in this setup, all the code is under whatever open license you prefer, and all the art and sound for everything in the "demo" section is under an open license as well. However, past that point all the art and music (and assets like level data files, etc) is a seperate data-pack from the full retail version which can only come bundled with your own official retail release (since you retain all rights, and the assets can even be free of cost if you want). Since this requires splitting up your game into two legally distinct parts, you can distribute them in two packages via package managers too (you have to install "game" and "game-data" for example).

Despite all my rage I'm still just Nokia N-Gage!

I put a lot of work into manually making the English captions, so if you have trouble with un-captioned YouTubePoops, don't worry!
