A terrible harmful algal bloom (HAB) is currently killing fish and sickening people off the coast of southern Australia. Karenia mikimotoi is a dinoflagellate phytoplankton that makes reactive oxygen species, mucilage (aka sea snot, that can clog fish gills) and other poorly understood toxins.
