I'm thinking about dreidels because I am holding a driedel now. So these things recount the miracle of channukah, right?

The connection there being the first letter of each hebrew word in the phrase appears on each of the four faces of the dreidel. That, and by tradition, in Israel "here" is used instead of "there" (ש/פ). So dispora Jews are probably not too familiar with נ ג ה פ dreidels unless you picked one up as a tourist or you have Israeli family/friends.

The channukah miracle isn't really about Israel as much as the Temple though? So why are the borders of a modern nation state used to distinguish between here and there? We're all on the same "here", planet earth... We are all am yisrael, the nation (more in the sense of a people) of Israel, not the modern nation state's borders?

My way of thinking is, buck that tradition, and always use peh, because we are all "here" in the sense that we are not truly divided by borders in modern Jewry. Whether in Palestine or the diaspora it doesn't make sense not to do this unless you take the view that dreidels should only use peh on the Temple mount, or within the city of Jerusalem, unless you are just agree with the idea of this tradition for other reasons. I can certainly imagine some crotchety relatives or religious zionists might object, but the nation (people) of Israel is what is exceptional, not the nation-state or its political boundaries.
