Clams of course produce poop from digested material, but they also produce pseudofeces from all the stuff picked up by their gills that they don't eat. The pseudofeces is packaged up in mucus. Both the poop and not-poop are shot out the siphon when the clam claps its valves together!
The production of #pseudofeces (still trying to get this hashtag to take off) is considered a major ecosystem service of bivalves. They are clearing the water column, producing sediment which decomposes and releases nutrients. Meanwhile the clearer water has greater supply of light to fuel phytoplankton growth from those nutrients! #clamFacts
