I cannot understate how much an artist leaving mastodon.art destroys my server's ability to actually fetch the media you are trying to promote. Idk what the infra setup is at mastodon.art, but none of those others servers have it working reliably. I always gotta load the web browser when people are "seeking more visibility" where I previously would have just seen it.

If you are a visual artist it is obviously important that your art actually loads on my screen so I can see it.

I think people have grown a pessimistic view towards single user instances that is unwarranted. Every time I pull account stats for my personal data and run through it, most of my most interesting mutuals are running a single user instance. Far more than I have to deal with in terms of shitheads or block evader throwaway servers.

On the other hand the association between what instance software they use and certain political views is usually spot-on and exceptions are exceptional. Namely that the various shitheads tend more towards Akkoma and Soapbox these days. Thankfully both of those come with excellent features for getting the short-list of who interacts with who so you can suspend their shitty friends too.
