re: meta, summarized thoughts, partially directed at reader
At least I'm fairly confident that the people in my social circles are willing to introspect on their role in this sort of stuff. I hope that that doesn't turn out overly optimistic.
re: meta, summarized thoughts, partially directed at reader
Oh, and as a final note for the uwu trans channer folks that somehow aren't blocked here yet: don't bother trying to suck up to me in the replies. I've been keeping track of your comments for months too, and I know exactly what you're playing at.
meta, summarized thoughts, partially directed at reader
Some thoughts on the current meta around TBS, and I am deliberately being very careful about how I phrase this (and again, no, this is *not* an invitation to complain about things you think are related):
- A large amount of people has no fucking clue what is going on right now, because there are no reliable cohesive sources of information as far as I can tell, and people claim all sorts of things.
Only the fall-out is currently visible to most onlookers, and it is rather confusing to them and *not* likely to result in anything beneficial long-term. Calling things out is a good thing, but it does need to actually be understandable *what* you are calling out.
- This is a very good example of why receipts are important, because over half of the claims flying around are misrepresentations, but I only know that because I have been following *all* of the involved parties over the past several months.
If people are expected to believe *everything* currently being said at face value (even if just considering the claims of bigotry of some sort), the resulting conclusions would be a) completely wrong, b) very Not Good for everyone involved
- There is a lot of racism involved. There is also a lot of ableism involved. This time around, there doesn't seem to be much transphobia involved, and the article that claims there is, is wildly off-base on many of the entries they're reviewed (I know this because I looked into their FediBlocks when they first appeared).
- I think *everybody* involved should take a step back and try to find a constructive way forward, and this is going to involve some critical introspection about the behaviour in one's own group, and how your friends have contributed to the problem.
- If you think that's a euphemism to blame one 'side' without naming it, no it isn't. I can assure you that your 'side' is meant to be included in that statement too. I also know that people from all 'sides' involved are following me.
I am really quite tired of this particular conflict already. Not because there are no real problems that need to be solved; but because the way things are going now, no progress actually seems to be made towards solving it. It only seems to get worse.
White queer and white trans people listen to Black trans people challenge! Difficulty: IMPOSSIBLE
I'm making this post unlisted bc my users are getting triggered by the astounding levels of racism that white queer and trans fedi is spewing right now and I'm not trying to add to the pile by flooding the local timeline, but please boost.
Just about every single Black trans person I know on fedi (and there are so few of us for EXACTLY THIS REASON) is feeling the impact of your bullshit today. We are tired, we are over it, and ppl are starting to disengage.
So many of you are erasing Ro's identity to fit your narrative that they are transphobic. So many of you are desperately trying to fashion what you are reading as Black masculinity into a cudgel to use against them while using trans femininity as your shield, all so you dont have to address your whiteness.
It's violent and it's fucking disgusting. We see what you're up to because it's nothing new. White queers are always pulling the same shit on every social media platform I've ever been on. So I will speak bluntly and clearly because I want y'all to hear me here.
WHITE QUEER AND TRANS FEDI: You are not the center of the universe. You are not entitled to immunity from the consequences of your actions. You are all complicit in the systemic violence of whiteness. Every single one of you.
A VERY FEW of you (and I do mean few. Very much the exception, statistically) have begun to do the work to understand what that really means and have a chance of becoming traitors to white supremacy. These are the folks I'm interested in operating in solidarity with, and they demonstrate their willingness to change in their actions every day.
As for the rest of you, AKA most of you, do me a favor and stop wasting our time. Take that progress flag out of your avatar, take BLM out of your bio, and keep Black Fedi out your fucking mouth for a change.
And as always, don't PISS on us and tell us it's raining. It's insulting.
Thanks.
meta, call-outs, quote toot
I don't normally do quote toots, but this is an exception, because I think this post makes an important point, *but* I only partly agree with it, and it is a very touchy topic.

This is a very real problem, and definitely something that not enough mind is paid to. And I mean in general, and also outside of fedi(!) - not just with recent events, which is what I suspect this post is referring to.
However, there is another side of that coin. Because while there are legitimate reasons to not be aware of things like this, the really important thing is how you respond when you *are* made aware of it.
When someone straight-up tells you "that is not okay, because <consequences and context>", do you take a step back, re-evaluate, and correct and apologize where necessary? Or do you double down on "I could not have known that!" as if that relieves you from any obligation to do anything about it?
Because there is a responsibility here on both parties. Yes, people should not assume that the social implications of actions are obvious to everybody, and be prepared to communicate directly and clearly about them.
But conversely, those people for whom they are not, need to accept that this means their actions are sometimes going to have unintended consequences, and be open to correcting course promptly when that happens.
With that having been said, yes, this is a very widespread problem, and I would say that it's a good example of how in the wrong circumstances, genuinely protective behaviour in leftist communities can turn into ableist lateral violence.
(Note: if you're thinking of responding to this by going "yeah, so-and-so is an asshole, aren't they": don't. This is not an invitation for harassing people, and I *will* block you for it. This is a much more general problem that's been bouncing around on fedi for a while. Likewise, this is *not* an invitation to complain about defederation. Defederation is a legitimate and necessary mechanism.)
Some people are expressing concern that there's a disproportionate number of instances ran by transfeminine folk on The Bad Space's list.
What they are leaving out (in some cases maliciously) is that there's also a disproportionate number of instances ran by transfeminine folk on its sources (and more ran by other trans people).
There is a disproportionate number of instances ran by transfeminine folk on the Fedi, because there is a disproportionate number of transfeminine folk here.

Right now, could you prepare a slice of toast with zero embodied carbon emissions?
Since at least the 2000s, big polluters have tried to frame carbon emissions as an issue to be solved through the purchasing choices of individual consumers.
Solving climate change, we've been told, is not a matter of public policy or infrastructure. Instead, it's about convincing individual consumers to reduce their "carbon footprint" (a term coined by BP: https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/aug/23/big-oil-coined-carbon-footprints-to-blame-us-for-their-greed-keep-them-on-the-hook).
Yet, right now, millions of people couldn't prepare a slice of toast without causing carbon emissions, even if they wanted to.
In many low-density single-use-zoned suburbs, the only realistic option for getting to the store to get a loaf of bread is to drive. The power coming out of the mains includes energy from coal or gas.
But.
Even if they invested in solar panels, and an inverter, and a battery system, and only used an electric toaster, and baked the loaf themselves in an electric oven, and walked/cycled/drove an EV to the store to get flour and yeast, there are still embodied carbon emissions in that loaf of bread.
Just think about the diesel powered trucks used to transport the grains and packaging to the flour factory, the energy used to power the milling equipment, and the diesel fuel used to transport that flour to the store.
Basically, unless you go completely off grid and grow your own organic wheat, your zero emissions toast just ain't happening.
And that's for the most basic of food products!
Unless we get the infrastructure in place to move to a 100% renewables and storage grid, and use it to power fully electric freight rail and zero emissions passenger transport, pretty much all of our decarbonisation efforts are non-starters.
This is fundamentally an infrastructure and public policy problem, not a problem of individual consumer choice.

This is amazing.
I'm a few days behind, but basically all of Copenhagen found out this weekend that laws currently in force allow bicycles to park in all city car parking spots, when a representative of the "Socialist" party made a public proposal to put up informative signage to that effect.
The Technical and Environment Commission would like you to be aware, however, that it could have unforeseen consequences to inform people that bikes can be parked in the same spots as motor vehicles
I fully expect this law to be reversed at the earliest opportunity, but until then: Let the hilarity ensue!
