Hello from my shift at the rural public library. While you're all debating large language models and AI and complicated online privacy topics, we are still storing our petty cash like this.
Now that a lot of people are regrouping from intense and embarrassing bouts of white fragility and white toxicity, if you are now turning to trying to help and support BIPoC and others directly impacted by the current Fedi meta bullshit, you may want to review this evergreen piece by Namira Islam Anani, about Silk's Ring Theory (how not to say the wrong thing to the wrong people): https://niawrites.medium.com/modifying-silk-ring-theory-for-allyship-c7ae4963912d
Please remember: This is a GUIDELINE. You will still be required to engage your critical thinking skills to figure out when's right to apply it, and how to specifically apply it to your situation.
But I personally have found the idea of Silk's rings to be very helpful both in the health and caregiving context and the effort of allyship/accomplicing to marginalized folks in general.
good day everyone ✨
lets try new iteration of #GodotHelpDesk!
if you're starting to use #GodotEngine recently or you're just running into issues: ask your questions, write about things you run into or otherwise in this thread!

no wrong questions, no matter how big or small!
boosts appreciated! ✨
edit: thank y’all for this iteration! tune in next week for another! 🙏 ✨
@joepie91 I think it's one of those things where you have to pay them enough to incentivize them not to steal the money they're moving.
@joepie91 Funny saying in Spanish: el que reparte lleva la mejor parte. The one who cuts up the pie, gets the biggest piece. (Approximate, non-literal translation.)
Oh gooood, this whole #Unity3D blowout?
It literally happened because of that shitty Iron Source buy-out that everyone was pissed about. The call to add this fee literally came from the Iron Source side of the business, and it only exists to "kill AppLovin" (a rival ad provider that is better). https://mobilegamer.biz/unity-is-offering-a-runtime-fee-waiver-if-you-switch-to-levelplay-as-it-tries-to-kill-applovin/
Cabinet building project: success! Small custom cabinet on wheels for under a desk, as a practice project for eventually building some proper storage cabinets for the kitchen.
Managed to go from "base materials from hardware store" to "finished cabinet" in under 24 hours, which I consider an achievement given the ADHD factor :)
It looks like Allister Brimble has been commissioned to write a new theme for OpenRCT2.
(For those who don't know -- OpenRCT2 is an open source remake of RollerCoaster Tycoon 2.)
Before this Allister Brimble wrote most of the soundtracks for RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 and RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. That, of course, was twenty years ago.
You can hear it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkvaRXyJOTM
re: meta, call-outs, quote toot
Here is a litmus test for whether things are still constructive, or just spiraling into lateral violence:
If someone raises a concern, and *acknowledges and accounts for* the counterpoints and counterconcerns upfront and aloud, are people willing to talk seriously? Or do they still receive a hostile response?
This litmus test was failed many times over the past few days.
why legal standards of proof don't work for private abuse accountability
Where this overreliance and over-identification with legal standards do some of the worst harm is in community accountability for abuse. In legal cases where a person's freedom and property are at stake, only one valid legal conclusion is allowed: guilty/not guilty, liable/not liable and so on. This unitary result will be used as a basis for state incarceration, taking of property, removal of privileges and so on backed by state violence.
In private community decisions, on the other hand, people can come to any number of different conclusions and take action based on what they believes, none of which involves government-legitimized taking the accused person's freedom, life, or property.
This means that asking for "proof" from victims (I keep putting that in quotes because honestly, 90% of people who are way too happy to bring it up have no idea what it actually means) often does more harm than good, and just drags the discussion down to conflicting standards of proof (which few people involved will actually have the skill to articulate and settle on), clashing interpretations, and a whole lot of retraumatization for victims.
Tools used:
- Cordless drill for screws
- Drill press (could also have used the cordless drill instead, this was just slightly easier)
- Two right-angle clamps (can be done without, but these are 100% worth the money if you can afford it, even cheap ones)
- Paper template for knowing where to pre-drill the holes
- An iron, for laminating the exposed sides
- One of those cheapo 'vice tables', the foldable ones made of MDF
- Countersink drill
- Pneumatic nailgun for the backing (could likely be replaced with one of those very cheap spring-loaded staple guns, or even just hammering small nails manually)
Boards were cut to size at the hardware store; I'd say I spent about 19 EUR total on the boards + backing (really it was about 25 EUR, but I have quite some bits left over). The wheels alone cost more than that.
Used two screws per shelf per side; in hindsight, I should've probably used a third, or added some dowels. Wanted to use those cam lock nuts, but hardware store didn't have them, so just drilled into it from the outside and used plastic caps to cover up the screw heads.
So yeah, ended up not being too complex, and very much possible to replicate without a lot of tools!
(Not entirely satisfied with the quality of the laminated layer on these boards, but it is what it is)

i love to have minor language adjustments as i realize a fucked up piece of rhetoric around class that was previously very normalized to me, even if like, something i don't *say*
I said before that I wouldn't dignify the subject of dog whistles with my thoughts. But let me give you a primer.
In any discussion where bigots are tooting, look for oft repeated phrases. Look for different people using the same phrases to communicate.
Language changes rapidly in discourse, so normally in non dog whistly discourse, you would expect to see different parties reach common understanding without mirroring each other's words and phrases. But in the presence of bigotry and group think, people will literally echo and mirror specific phrases in the discourse.
Right now, some hot dog whistles on the Fediverse in racist bigotry are "yes this makes sense", "conservative troll", and "lies exposed" or "lies revealed". They seem innocuous but these phrases signal identity, community, and safety among the racist bigots, and help to identify their targets. They also help build momentum for dogpiling and brigading that will persist for months or years.
Keep your wits about you and try not to perpetuate or boost dog whistles.
In the process of moving to @joepie91. This account will stay active for the foreseeable future! But please also follow the other one.
