Cod lobby or something. I don't know, I don't play multiplayer shooters.

Charts like these – showing the immense carbon footprints of billionaires – should make us seriously question any exhortation on what "we" must do to address #ClimateChange (I'm guilty of using this phrasing too). Always ask: who is the "we"?

Found it! (Thanks @largess)
If the world's richest 10% reduced their carbon footprint to the EU mean, carbon emissions would fall by 32%.

Also also, I've noticed that the other people who seem to share my kinks (and don't fail the vibe check), are overwhelmingly trans/queer, autistic, and anarchist - and I'm quite curious why that is, because I can't attribute *all* of that to the vibe check

Browsing lewd stuff, I can't help but notice that even on the kinky instances, the cis dudes always seem to have the absolute most boring feeds, just endless fields of dickpics in nearly the same pose every time, no creativity, no fantasies, no identifiable kink

Presumably some people find this interesting, but for me... no thanks, a bit more personality would be nice :/

I still remember when I first learned that there are places where parents have to drive around their kids all the time, to go to friends or other places.

It baffled me at the time, and it still does today.

re: Facebook Threads

(For those unfamiliar: MAU means Monthly Active Users, and so it's measured over the past month.

"After a month" is exactly when the user surge drops outside of the measuring frame, and so everybody who tried it out and didn't return suddenly no longer gets counted. And so you *always* get a sharp drop.)

"Threads userbase drops by 80%, only a month after launch"

Yes, this is how MAU metrics work, when are journalists gonna stop reporting these misleading metrics?

At the last tech job I worked at, the part-time CFO of the company revealed that he also owns apartment buildings in another state that he rents out. He explained that this was his main source of income. When he asked me if I rent or own my place, I told him the truth and replied that I rented.

His response? "Oh, so you're one of those people?".

I fucking hate landlords. Glad that company went under.

I hate to summarise all arguments with "actually it's just capitalism again" but

it's just capitalism again

re: theorising about why people defend large, bad instances

like a lot of the capitalist mentality is that of a constant fight for survival, where the sole benefit is the illusion of independence in your choices

whereas in reality everyone is supported by others and breaking down the barriers to turn those people supporting you into actual people you need to care about, is a scary prospect, since before you were under the illusion you could do it all yourself

but like, you couldn't. there were people exploiting and controlling you all along. now you have the choice to choose your community, but that comes with the fear of choosing incorrectly, even though that's not nearly as bad as you'd be led to believe

Show thread

theorising about why people defend large, bad instances

I think that the reason why people stay on places like mastodon.social and hate people telling them to leave and go to another instance is because they're used to being on a website run by people who don't give a shit about them, and confronting that means confronting the possibility that they won't find a place that does give a shit about them, and would have to just fuck off to nowhere

so you have this self-fulfilling prophecy of self-antagonism where if you stop fighting you cease to exist, when in reality you can just stop fighting and be fine, with the occasional requirement to actually be part of a community instead of fending for yourself

The world if programmers, instead of trying to make it faster to write code, focused on making it *unnecessary* to write that code in the first place

Bluesky is a place where people who don’t like computers assume computers can do things well, Fediverse is where people who really like computers are sure they cannot do things.

All of these instances are run by Jeff of newsie.social . Some of them now redirect to others when they didn't 'take off'. I think I'm also missing at least one but I also think that one got shut down and redirects to his business now.
