I used the internet archive's wayback machine to look at an old version of a site, which contained a link to the wayback machine, showing the site itself.
It tried to see if the wayback machine had archived itself, which it turns out the answer is NO.
I'm not sure if this is just my recommendations bubble, but I've been noticing a significant uptick on YouTube lately of non-Linux-nerds publishing "why I'm switching to <FOSS thing>" videos, with their motivation being mainly practical, political or ideological (rather than technical).
It's interesting to see and I'm not entirely sure where this pattern started.

To clarify: I'm talking about using the incremental node location mechanism to find the closest N nodes to a given key, except instead of the key being eg. a content hash, it's *also* a node ID.
And then each peer just maintains a session with the N closest publicly-connectable nodes to it, and someone wanting to connect *to* a firewalled/NATed peer finds those same N closest connectable nodes and asks one of them to relay traffic to the target peer for it.

Hey y'all, if you want a cloud sync that doesn't involve you giving your files to a third party, then SyncThing is pretty great.
Free, open source, open protocol, Mac, Linux, Windows, Android, frequent updates, works well between version changes, etc.
If you're a bit nerdy you can have all your things sync to your own server, along with versioning in case you make an oops.
If you're less nerdy you can still get your phone+laptop+desktop all in sync, which is grand.
Okay, am I overlooking something or would it be really trivial to adapt a Kademlia DHT to be a relay/routing protocol (for connecting to unconnectable peers in a P2P network) instead? This seems like a really obvious thing to do, but I've never seen anyone mention it?

@clarfonthey This reminds me of the widespread adage that "users lie, so asking them what they need will not get you useful answers".
The people repeating this line invariably have never considered that maybe they're just asking it wrong. Which they are, because they usually ask "what would you do" (ie. a technical question) and not "what frustrates you" (ie. a needs question).

A/B testing is kinda a good representation of the lack of trust and consent in modern tech
it's basically gaslighting your users because either you don't trust them to know what they want, or because you want something that's counter to their needs
@sandradejong @waag Ik heb met lesgeven in het verleden geen problemen gehad met Jitsi in Firefox, maar dat was wel 1-op-1. Enige probleem was haperend beeld maar dat leek te zijn omdat de verbinding aan de andere kant belabberd slecht was, en daar kan Jitsi denk ik weinig aan doen.

You can extinguish tear gas canisters!
Wearing heat-proof gloves, submerge the canister in a wide-mouthed water jug containing baking soda, dish soap, and/or vegetable oil—3 tablespoons of each per liter of water.
Cover the top with one hand, just enough to keep the gas from getting out, and shake the jug.
Never seal a bottle containing an active tear gas canister—you don't want it to explode.
One role you could play at demonstrations is to show up prepared to protect your fellow human beings from toxic gas, in case the mercenaries deploy it.
