@delroth The only way I could see that someone might consider Hook of Holland to be part of Rotterdam's urban area is because there's a metro line running there, and the only reason for that is cost-cutting of the train line that that previously was... so yeah, that's a bizarre classification.

This "scientific" article from Sony CSL about 15 min cities has been making the rounds in the news those past few weeks, and uhhh
As far as I can tell it's really bad research? It's based on OSM data without trying to compensate for disparity in coverage. It's based on some weird definition of urban areas that in some cases include several acres of uninhabited mountains, which reduce city averages. Basic mistakes.

@aetios @whreq Als ik de achterliggende paper goed begrijp (die het overigens niet over weersomstandigheden heeft...) is dat specifieke effect volgens hen sterk afhankelijk van hoge density en zou het dus juist moeten *verminderen* als de effectieve veiligheidsafstand groter is, zoals hierboven gesuggereerd wordt bij slecht weer (want: voorzichtiger rijden en meer afstand dan "nodig" voor de snelheid).
De reden dat een verklaring o.b.v. menselijk gedrag niet genoeg is, is omdat dit soort "dat kun je zelf toch ook wel beredeneren" dingen precies is waar de meeste verkeerde aannames doorgaans huizen, en ik het onderwerp graag zo volledig mogelijk begrijp voordat ik definitieve conclusies trek.
Ik kan nog wel een heel verhaal afsteken over waarom ik specifiek bij dit onderwerp extra "skeptisch"/voorzichtig ben, maar dan zitten we hier morgen nog en daar heb ik nu echt de energie gewoon niet voor.

@whreq Het klinkt plausibel, maar ik ben niet helemaal overtuigd; want als ik in het verleden heb gezocht naar de oorzaak van een file bij slecht weer, was het eigenlijk altijd een ongeluk. Dat is een beperkte sample size natuurlijk, maar het is wel opvallend.

@aylamz Not any one specific thing, I've just been noticing a lot of good things; where the ecosystem has some sort of problem, and it's promptly addressed in some way that is consistent with its ideals.
The latest case of this is https://godotengine.org/article/godot-sdk-integrations/ but it's a general pattern I've noticed, and even in that article there are some interesting remarks that imply a pretty solid foundation of governance

Academia has a travel problem.
Attending faraway conferences is ecologically unsustainable, and creates a huge barrier to entry for people who are disabled, have care duties, or lack resources, among others.
One piece of the solution is to create local satellites of major conferences. This idea has been successfully implemented in Paris for #NeurIPS for a few years, and I'm happy to have joined the advising committee of NeurIPS@Paris (Dec 4&5 this year)

Godot overtaking Unity in one of the most recent, largest game jams out there is a wonderful example of the triumph of free software against a corporate platform. Something something Year of the Godot Desktop yada yada.

@rune From what I've seen, that unfortunately often just creates escalation, and a shouting match over who was 'right'. I figure that giving them a good scare as to What Could Have Happened is going to stick a lot better.
(This may not work the same way in countries where drivers *aren't* automatically liable for hitting cyclists)
