I have yet to actually work with it, so I may run into some unexpected roadblock once I do that, but... yeah
The abusive behavior that was being used to manipulate Lasse Collin into bringing on more maintainers for #xz went unnoticed because abusive behavior in Open Source communities is so pervasive. In context, we can clearly see it was part of an orchestrated operation. Out of context, it looks like just another asshole complaining about stuff they have no right to complain about. https://robmensching.com/blog/posts/2024/03/30/a-microcosm-of-the-interactions-in-open-source-projects/
Thirty spokes
meet in the hub.
Where the wheel isn’t
is where it’s useful.
Hollowed out,
clay makes a pot.
Where the pot’s not
is where it’s useful.
Cut doors and windows
to make a room.
Where the room isn’t,
there’s room for you.
So the profit in what is
is in the use of what isn’t.

"What if an AI got hyper-focused on making paperclips and destroyed us all?" asked the insufferable nerd, as corporations whose only directive is "make stock price go up" utterly destroyed the conditions favourable for human life
Can anyone suggest me some linkable sources that explain specifically how non-obvious bigotry works, and how to identify it as a moderator? Things like "just asking questions", misuse of statistics, and other forms that seem superficially legitimate if you're unfamiliar with their bigoted background.
(This is not for me; it's to have an all-in-one resource to link people to. So only sources that explain this in its entirety are useful, 'bits and pieces' are not helpful here, however well-intended)
CW-boost: ableism, captions
speculation, mention of trauma, re: Subtoot, CCC
@scy I often can't shake the feeling that this sort of "we cannot actively exclude anyone without very good reason" rhetoric in nerd circles, is just a manifestation of a sort of collective trauma around getting bullied, and having internalized the idea that excluding people makes you the bad person (regardless of circumstances)...
That then only gets applied to *active* exclusion and the implicit exclusion resulting from "not dealing with abusive people" is overlooked in the process
Why did it take over a decade for someone to make a braille display who's book reader application can read epub files? I don't know, but per the Polish reseller's specification page the new HIMS display - the EMotion finally has this ability. I know this topic occasionally comes up and might be more relevant with reading books in Braille through phones apparently being a little iffy, so figured it was worth mentioning. Plus, it includes a headphone jack and is powered by an octa-core processor and 4 GB of ram with Android 12 so I'd be very surprised if it was laggy if you wanted to use its TTS capabilities as well.
meta, facebook, subtoot
Ah yes, dude who has been working with Facebook tries to lecture people who have been trying to protect their communities for years that they have their priorities all wrong and they should care more about building moderation tools.
Hey. Hey Dan. You know what we all have been trying to push for for years, only to have it blocked by the same person who is now being all excited about Facebook getting involved? The same person you're defending in your post? Yeah, exactly.
Funnily, *we* didn't need to turn it into apologia for federating with known bad actors. Because *we* actually recognize that "keeping out bad actors" and "pushing for better moderation tooling" are two sides of the same coin, and not opposed to each other.
I don't know, man. Maybe you should be listening more and lecturing less.
Why can’t you suspend users in Pixelfed? Why is the only option marking their accounts as spam?
Why are mod management tools in Pixelfed still the worst of any software across the fediverse?
You want to talk about a commitment to improve moderation meaningfully? Why are you worried more about some ridiculous-ass reel app over key moderation features?
I held back before, but now it’s clear you’re just a bad faith actor looking to fulfill your own childish impulses of fame and building the “next big thing”.
If Loops and Sup are anything like how you treat the Pixelfed project, they’ll be jokes at the expense of the users and admins who try their best to make the most out of these broken platforms.
I don’t know how you sleep at night.
