A discussion about distributed federated systems else-network did bring up some concerning history that we should keep in mind:
#XMPP was, briefly, the dominant messaging system on the Internet. It was fully federated allowing hosting anywhere. Major extensions were being done by major companies (Apple adding voice and video for example). And it all fell apart because the three big providers (Apple, Google, Facebook) ditched it to have more control.

A lot of new Twitter folks still seem to be having a lot of trouble understanding that no, this is one place where their wants and needs are *not* at the top of the list, and instead the needs of vulnerable communities are. And I'm growing extremely tired of this entitled refusal to accept that.
Every single fucking time marginalized folks build something neat, the rest of the world comes rolling in and declares that They Must Now Be Catered To, damn the consequences. And the answer is no.
@scarnecchia And since this is a federated network, you are, of course, free to create an instance that doesn't do CWs for politics/news, or that otherwise doesn't respect the existing culture. But then the consequence of that is that you will very likely be defederated from a significant chunk of the network.
@scarnecchia This is very easily solved by not doing the thing that gets you instance-blocked.
@scarnecchia (Also: "a lot of folks are looking for that Twitter replacement" sounds like not our problem. This place is run by volunteers, and it's frankly absurd to expect them to jump and change their culture just because a bunch of other people want someone else to do the work for them.)
@scarnecchia But what it essentially boils down to: if I had to pick between "maintain the old safe environment for people who aren't welcome anywhere else and who have *built* this place" and "increasing adoption", I would 100% pick the former. We're not here to do free labour for people who cannot respect the needs of those who have actually done the work.
@scarnecchia This toot describes my feelings on this matter better than I currently have the energy to express myself: https://merveilles.town/@zens/109306670033307962
For techies who want to read the ActivityPub specs
Years ago I tried to learn ActivityPub. I succeeded, but it was difficult. I wrote this blog post which is a "what I wish I knew before trying to learn ActivityPub" guide. It is basically "how to read the specs in a way that will make them make more sense".
@Dee I will from now on use a cat in all of my projects

Trans Safety, media advisory
Trans Safety Network have published a safety guide for those considering engaging with a media request, based on community experience dealing with potentially exploitative or extractive content requests that in some cases set the participants up to be demonised.
Trans Safety, media advisory
There is an ITV documentary crew doing the rounds looking for trans people using DIY HRT sources.
While there are no clear red flags it's worth asking:
1. What would you be getting in return for being put at risk by being on camera?
2. What Trans input is there into the questions addressed by this documentary content? Are they seriously including our views or are they just gawping at the desperate state of our healthcare?
3. What have they done to build trust?

Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
