I know this is a sensitive topic, but if Mastodon wants to grow, it’s going to have change it’s culture as much as it expects folks to change for it. Insisting on #contentwarnings for things like #news and #politics will likely lead to fracturing or will eventually hamper adoption. Now, maybe that’s a desirable outcome, but a lot of folks are looking for that that twitter replacement and coming from a place where their metier is politics or current events.

@scarnecchia This toot describes my feelings on this matter better than I currently have the energy to express myself: merveilles.town/@zens/10930667

@scarnecchia But what it essentially boils down to: if I had to pick between "maintain the old safe environment for people who aren't welcome anywhere else and who have *built* this place" and "increasing adoption", I would 100% pick the former. We're not here to do free labour for people who cannot respect the needs of those who have actually done the work.

@scarnecchia (Also: "a lot of folks are looking for that Twitter replacement" sounds like not our problem. This place is run by volunteers, and it's frankly absurd to expect them to jump and change their culture just because a bunch of other people want someone else to do the work for them.)

@scarnecchia And since this is a federated network, you are, of course, free to create an instance that doesn't do CWs for politics/news, or that otherwise doesn't respect the existing culture. But then the consequence of that is that you will very likely be defederated from a significant chunk of the network.
