@evelyn@misskey.bubbletea.dev Interesting, I didn't know that!

@evelyn@misskey.bubbletea.dev Even from people who didn't go through Mastodon first?

@evelyn@misskey.bubbletea.dev Fair :) The influx does seem to be specific to Mastodon in this case, though

I find it kind of fascinating that there's a massive influx of new users to Mastodon and it seems that it's *not* a complete disaster. This is very rare for (comparatively) small communities! I'm very curious about why it's different from the usual "community norms overrun" in this case.

@evelyn@misskey.bubbletea.dev Yeah I just don't do video meetings anymore, people can schedule a text chat with me if they need to discuss something, literally every video meeting I've ever seen has been a complete waste of time and it's super invasive

Mastodon is literally the only social network I’ve used where I feel better after having used it. Everyone is sooo nice and genuine and I feel like I can take things at my own pace.

Next on my "Getting rid of Google" list is the calendar. Would like a cloud calendar that ideally is zero-knowledge. Which ones do you like?

The fediverse today trying to explain to newcomers where they are.

I really miss the Ambassador bots, they were so good and useful for getting good posts into diverse federated timelines. 😭 Can we have those back please?

[ Context: An instance, let's say example.flowers.social, would have an Ambassador bot that RTed any public post from that instance that got over the average number of likes. If I on another instance followed that Ambassador bot, then all the good posts from that instance would also be shared into my instance's federated timeline. ]

Asking "how do I find people to follow" around here is a bit like asking "how do I find people to email" or "how do I find penpals" - people come up with ingenious ways to find each other within and outside of a decentralised system.

A good way to find cool people on the Fediverse itself is posting something like "boost if you like [hobby], I want to find people to follow," ideally including a couple of hashtags. Instant list of active users with similar interests. :D

If you're new to the Fediverse, here's what made the platform work for me: aggressively following and unfollowing new people.

Whatever standards you've built up on Twitter for deciding to follow someone, throw them out the window. Follow someone because they made a funny or insightful post. Follow someone because their bio says they like pesto. Follow someone because they have a cute fursona. Anything really.

Following is free. And if it doesn't work out, unfollowing is also free.

@Mirteaaa Check your notification settings and see whether they're set up correctly? Eg. you might've accidentally turned off notification display entirely when trying to disable notification sounds?

@f0x Yeah I can't be sure either, but I feel like it's happened twice now. No way to tell after the fact whether it was Mastodon or my brain bugging out :p
