Ok this caught me off guard...

I was having an internet search for "adult tinker toys" and came across this online shop. Ah! Pro tinker toys. Cool. I look around, and it's not what I want - mostly memorabilia.

And then there's the **FAKE MASKS** section.

Ummm, what? This is something people are doing? They're PAYING for a pretend mask?

Just... what?

Sentences should have two punctuation marks at the end. One for grammar and one for intent. Like how when you put on a hat and look towards your friend saying "This one fits.?" as an expression but with a questioning tone to incite a response. If both puntuation marks are the same only one is provided, so it's minimally invasive and fits right in between language norms!.

Who needs an ORM when you already have a graph API with a database source mapping

Remember, before getting into a frustrated debate with that relative, if their absurd points which defy any sense of reason count as valid arguments then so does "counterpoint: no."

I find it outrageous and incredibly offensive how often subtitles are censored.

I've experienced it on broadcast TV. On Amazon. On YouTube. And elsewhere.

Deaf people do not need swear words hidden. Those of us with hearing loss don't suddenly decide, "Ah, yes, because I can't hear fully, I don't want to experience swearing anymore."

Stop censoring our content!

Every time you redesign your app, you vaporize all the experience built up by everyone who's been using the current version. It better be fucking worth it.

@cda I'm just amazed that this guy running this antarctic research station thought "Huh I'm changing the timezone I should email the internet to let them know" and found the right people to tell and the first reply is basically "Are you fucking drunk"

hackernews, sort of meta

HN commenters are very busy deliberating over how weird it is that all of the alternative social networks are just Twitter clones, and nobody is doing more experimental UX stuff

In the same thread where people are complaining about how fedi stuff and federation and all that is just so *difficult*

Gee I wonder why you're only finding Twitter clones

Heads-up: I will likely be gone from fedi and Matrix for a few days, as I try to unfuck my sleep schedule.

Redux, bonus hot take

Composability that only works with first-party code is not really composability

Redux, hot take

Redux is very composable in theory but extremely poorly composable in practice; it is very difficult to combine the subtrees of different third-party utilities in a way where the utilities are aware of their location in the tree, without resorting to a variety of different hacks (that are different for each utility)

And they do *need* to know their location in the tree, if you want those utilities to be mountable at arbitrary positions and able to manage their own state, and then you still need to figure out how to isolate the utility-specific action types too

Off to look for a different Redux query management library now, I guess

venting about shitty software devs

Some days you can just smell from a mile away that the author of a piece of software is 100% someone who would build a deportation system because "well, the tech is cool", and today is one of those days

You are only temporarily abled.

This is not a threat. It is a statement of fact.

Edit: Glad this is seeing so much resonance. If you've got any cash to spare, please check my pinned posts for my mutual aid request.

works for capitalists, not for artists, and perhaps one of the most illustrative examples of this would be subtitles:

Hobbyist subtitlers get regularly threatened with ruinous copyright lawsuits for daring to make TV shows more accessible to different audiences without the publisher's permission.

And now tech corporations use those very same hobbyist subtitles to train their audio transcription LLMs, and there are zero legal consequences for those corporations.
