This opinion will light my butt on fire, but mailing lists are absolutely the worst way to contribute code in modern day and age.

It took me 2 minutes to write and form a patch. Now I have to remind myself how to send it to upstream properly.
UNIX timestamps were the biggest innovation in timekeeping since the 1st of January, 1970

every day i subscribe more to @hannah's theory that all the recent weird tech decisions are executives consulting LLMs

I mean, LLMs would make perfect CEOs

- Confident
- Persuasive
- Well read
- Never admits a mistake, and will degrade you if you point one out to it
- Can make up reasonable sounding bullshit on the spot to explain their every action
- Relies on exploiting the unpaid labor of thousands of people
- Lives in a reality they invent for themselves
- Fundamentally uncreative

Just to recap the latest in the #Redhat RHEL vs downstreams not offering them any value drama:

Redhat publically states that downstream rebuilders offer them no value, and the RHEL community should all be working in the Centos-stream sandbox, because that's where the community is, because it has community right there in the name, and that's where the code fixes can land, and community is only about lines of code in the repo.

@almalinux goes "alright, no value in us being a 1:1 rebuild of RHEL, then we're cutting our own path while being based on Centos-stream, staying ABI compatible with RHEL, but we'll fix our own bugs when we find them"

Alma Linux then finds a CVE in the iperf3 server impacting everyone in the Enterprise Linux 9 ecosystem, so they release the fix for AlmaLinux, and then immediately open pull requests for Fedora and Centos-stream to land the fix upstream. Which would seem to be exactly what Redhat was asking for this whole time.

Redhat's response to the centos-stream pull request? "There is no current customer demand for this fix in RHEL, so we're not interested in this fix"

The astute will notice that the pull request is feeding into centos-stream, and not RHEL. But they're making merge decisions here based on immediate customer demand in RHEL.

So maybe this whole "Centos-stream is the community distro" line was bullshit and it really is just the beta testing ground for RHEL, just like all of us kind of thought it was while getting shouted down by the centos-stream advocates this whole time.

So Redhat is still doing great.

re: XMPP, Matrix

That same bunch of people also often tends to be suspiciously close to channer culture, which should maybe be a clue, idk

XMPP, Matrix

So the latest XMPP proponent argument against Matrix was "Element works with cops, that's why you should use XMPP instead"

And here I see a Conversations developer and an ejabberd developer being excited about XMPP being adopted by German cops

It's almost as if the weirdly aggressive arguments coming from those XMPP proponents (it's always the same bunch of people) are made in bad faith

Dear furries and the furry-adjacent,

This is your periodic reminder that the artist Ken Sample - also known as Ken Cougr - is widely credited as having invented the very concept of a fursona, and that he is a Black man.

on "malleable computing"

I think I've worked out what's been bothering me about the "malleable computing" scene: it's mainly white dudes and the conversation mainly revolves around making things more hackable for nerds.

There's no consideration in there of empowerment for marginalized folks specifically, or consent. It's only addressing half of the problem that it claims to address - for the other half, it sort of implicitly assumes that you're in a demographic where you're not at risk of your consent being violated, for example.

None of this is really *obvious* - on the face of it, the goals of malleable computing sound laudable. But as you read through it more and more, and look at what people are actually discussing, after a while it becomes apparent that diverse perspectives are sorely missing.

I don't think the goals of "malleable computing" are *bad*, per se. But I don't think it's anywhere near as socially revolutionary as it positions itself, and there is a lot of room for it to amplify existing power differentials, even if that was not the original intention.

In the UK, due to cultural norms there is a slightly different standard for device connectivity known as "Universal Serial Double-Decker Bus" (USDDB).

This is what you get for nicely asking a so called autistic coach for a CW for abuse of autistics.

PSA about ADHD/autism "coaches"

Once again I want to warn people about the ADHD/autism "coaches" that have been popping up all over social media over the past few years, posting relatable memes and such.

Please don't boost their posts, they are a marketing campaign.

There are a lot of problems with this 'coaching' model - all too often it boils down to some well-off dude doing 'consulting sessions' that are only accessible to other well-off dudes, and that do nothing to systemically improve the situation for ND folks.

And just like with any other systemic problem: you should not expect good advice from someone who does not acknowledge the source of the problem, and tries to "solve" it only on an individual level - certainly not if their only qualification is "I'm getting paid to talk to you".

On top of all that, these dudes *overwhelmingly* fail vibe checks once you look a bit deeper into their behaviour and interactions with people. There are often associations with hate organizations like Autism Speaks, transphobic organizations, and so on.

Note that this is only about the "coaching" industry - there are plenty of people who genuinely try to help others navigate neurodiversity and the oppression that comes with it. But those people generally don't make it Their Brand, they're generally not white dudes, and they generally don't charge fixed high sums of money.

(This toot inspired by the "autistic coach" who just ended up on Fediblock for shitty behaviour, but it's far from the first incident, and I've been noticing these people for years now not just on fedi, but also on Twitter before that)

Please, for the love of god, reply to the boosted toots, delete the handle and then write "LB: comment".
That way people know what this mysterious last boost was.

And the broken tech hits just keep coming github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/issue

Hey, an instance for black queer folk that needs a bit of exposure to get the word out about it. Please boost if you have friends who've felt alienated by the nazis you tend to find on other, unmentionable servers. blackqueer.life

Long rant about whiteness (again)

On my instance promotion post a few days ago, somebody responded that we were just encouraging more division by making a server for black queer folks. Well, I blocked that person but someone responded to them and it inspired me to do some writing. I wasn't gonna do any discourse today but whatever. Anyway

it's always so funny to me when white people (for whom whiteness AKA structural racial tribalism was invented) accuse people of color of creating unnecessary divisions. Like, we're just reacting in self defense to Y'ALL.

White supremacy truly is a hell of a thing bc they don't even have to understand that they're getting advantages in order to benefit. They can safely sit in ignorance, blathering on in our replies about how confused they are, meanwhile a lot of us are out here fighting for our lives.

Like, I didn't develop my analysis of white supremacy for fun. I did it out of survival bc I needed to understand how fucked my life has been bc of whiteness in order to counteract it. I didn't have the luxury of spending decades of my life doing no critical thinking about race because race was governing my interpersonal interactions and my societal position from jump.

So I had to do a shit ton of reading and learning and unlearning and struggling and unpacking and rethinking... I had to rebuild myself. Because I had no choice.

And so because of all of that work I had to do and all of those life experiences I had and all the pain I went though, at this point in my life I have some decent insight into what the hell is going on. And I know how to move and what to do to secure a little online space for people like me so we don't have to be quite so fucking miserable everywhere we go...

And here comes ol johnny two-by-four, not a critical thought in his head, "isn't that just dividing us more?" He's never had to think about this before in his life. And he's expecting me to what, just explain to him all the shit I had to figure out myself in spite of all the messages society hammered into my brain?

Nah, fuck that and fuck him too. If helping to craft a space like this is divisive, then I'll be divisive all day long. Maybe one of you can go hold his hand while he flips out bc it won't be me!

This is a credible proposal for DRM for websites in general. It would enable unbeatable adblock-blocking. It would prevent user customization for not just convenience but also accessibility.

I do not say this lightly: Enabling the forfeiture of control over the browsing experience is a fundamentally evil idea that must be rejected now, as it has been in the past, and we must remain vigilant against its reemergence in the future.
