hot take re: pride

no pride flags for allies / "allies"
be proud of something else, not your (alleged, self-claimed) support for us

the only reason these shitty "ally" flags exist is that you feel "left out" of spaces that were created specifically for queer people to feel safe(r). You know the "we will create our own space" → "why are you excluding us" → "you do not fit in" comic? that.

Vierkantor moderation announcement

Starting tonight, every week I will be limiting the biggest instance that is not yet limited or blocked. This means existing connections will remain available but new ones are blocked. This policy will remain in place until the big instances get some actually good moderation or until I get bored.

If you are on an instance that is limited or likely to be limited soon, I will probably not accept your follow request. I recommend finding another instance that is community-scale, not world-scale.

Mr. Woof, charge the limitation pulse.

respirator rec? 😷👺🛫:boostsPorFavor:

hello! i am going to be on an intl flight next month and would like to not get murderized or sick! what masks/respirators would you rec?

- i'm willing to spend for my health (espc if it's reusable)
- it'd be great if the respirators were reusable

(other safety practices are welcome too! previously i'd use reddit but nope :P)

Fedi meta

It wouldnt surprise me if the reason a lot of large instances are run b irresponsible people is because it’s easier to gain more users if you just let ppl roam freely. Running a fuck ton of instances is a sign that you dont look after the spaces you have created. Its like all my 500 foliage brushes in my art program that i never use.

blah, fuckin' meta again i guess let's goo

man i've been trying to write a post about misogyny and white supremacy benefiting big instance techy admins, who get loads of people fluffing their bad decisions in the comments (no matter how terrible the decision-making process), but I'm just running out of steam; i dunno how to say anything that hasn't already been said

it's pretty clear that most of these big instance admins are getting high as fuck on the attention, validation, and sense of power that admining a big instance affords, and I feel like we need a way to get around that

meta, moderation

It's really interesting how instance moderation policy always seems to fall into exactly two buckets

1. We aim for harm reduction, and proactively moderate problematic users on our own instance, but we won't tone-police and it's okay if you block our instance because you just don't vibe with it
2. It's not our job to moderate our users, they should be free to speak their mind regardless of what it is, but we *will* tone-police people on other servers, and get very angry about instance blocks

“Some of your posts have been reported by a user and I resolved it so far.

In the future. Please make sure not to insult others and be rude.”

Here’s my suggestion to the moderators of mstdn.social: Stop tone policing people on other instances. I’m not on your instance and I’ll speak my mind as I like on my own one. If anyone has a problem with that, they can block me. It’s not your job to tone police the fediverse even if you are a mega instance.

People learning how many instances stux runs are realizing fedi has already had a Jeff for a long time.

So, the thing is, a reputation is usually trashed not by the original incident, but how one reacts to criticism that people give.

People are not really gonna care enough to remember that one time you messed up, got corrected, and you roll with it.

People WILL remember that time you doubled down over and over.

Thanks to all the people publicly saying "aww, let's just give Zuck a chance," you're really helping me populate my "people who missed the whole point of the Fediverse and naïvely collaborate with fascists to usurp everything that's good in the world" block list

More fedi meta ranting

Of course if we *do* block mstdn.social now, which we will only do (as with all our blocks) if we have a legitimate reason to do that in order to protect our userbase, there's this fucking annoying 'gotcha' - which as others have pointed out, is the kind of thing you hear in abusive relationships.

And the sad truth of fedi is, we never have to look for reasons to ban instances. There's no shortage of shit people spinning up their little fash echo-chambers.

subtoot, re: venting, meta (both)

Also, it sure is something to be a privileged white dude and tell a bunch of marginalized folks who are distressed about their only safe social space disappearing, to "touch grass"

i actually want straight people to be more freaked out and stop treating pride like a fun summer street fair thank you for coming to my ted talk

If I call stux a wanker he can press a button and all the folk on his server can no longer follow me, if he's got 2000 users fine whatever but his server is Big and it should Never have been allowed to get this Big, I should not have been allowed to do the silly thing I did which was joining one of his servers

(I'd call gargron a wanker too but he already knows)

Seriously, seriously-seriously, why does activitypub software not default to having a maximum number of users per server. It's legit to not have seen this coming but this absolutely needs to be a thing going forward
