By the way, if you are transgender, and visit Tokyo's famous gay quarter, Shinjuku Nichōme, you should be aware that you are likely to encounter hostility or be flat-out refused entry in MANY lesbian and gay bars. I don't know if things have changed since the pandemic (I certainly hope so), but I had numerous traumatic experiences, even at bars that had previously seemed welcoming. I don't even think apps are bad, but I just wish we could recognize what that term has come to mean: a tightly coupled stack that includes a client, server, service, protocol, and platform.

That coupling can absolutely help in some ways but also makes our technology far more vulnerable to monopolizing and Doctorow's enshittificaton. It can put us at risk of our data and our social interactions being fully captured by corporate interests.
