okay this whole "no limit" thing is a really bad default for stop jobs that happen before cleaning up the storage state for shutdown. Every time this happens I feel my life flashing before my eyes. This time, I didn't have to reinstall my OS. This time...

Wederom, nee.

extreme transphobia, trump, fascism

Trump has made extreme transphobia an explicit campaign point. youtu.be/6xGOZwZo1S8

So many feelings of fear, despair, anger — I'm not proud of what rises to the top, but I still need to say it.

Fuck you, allies. Fuck you for buying Harry Potter shit. Fuck you for politely disagreeing with transphobes. Fuck you for sitting this one out. Fuck you for your lazy jokes.

You made this possible, and for that: fuck you.

medical, transness, why "biological sex" for trans people is medically inaccurate

cis people need to learn that categorizing trans people into "biological {fe,}male" in medical settings isn't pragmatic – it's biologically inaccurate

when a study studies "biological women", they really mean cis women, who have menstrual cycles and E-dominant endocrine systems, and breasts, and vice versa for studies on cis men.

the problem is that these are entirely seperate sets of characteristics from trans people. a trans guy might have no menstral cycle and no breasts. a trans woman might have an E-dominant endocrine system and no testicles.

the statement "Biological $GENDER have $PROPERTY" means nothing to a trans person, because the science doesn't tell us what actual physical characteristic $PROPERTY is linked to, and assuming we have all the same characteristics as a cis $GENDER is simply incorrect.

A few years ago one of the petrol stations we fill up at, when J commuted regularly, had a deal on where you'd get a free little plushy when spending over a certain amount. They were small and became cat toys. There's a blueberry, a sealion, a mushroom, I think some others. They live on the floor and travel around the house at the whim of the cats. Occasionally we'll be minding our own business and a blueberry plushy will fly across the room.

This is fascism. There is nothing "semi" about it. This is not "normal" political discourse, DeSantis is not a "normal" governor, and the Republican Party is not a "normal" political organization. It is fascism.
"Hide your books to avoid felony charges, Florida schools tell teachers. Unsure what titles violate new state rules, two school districts tell educators to conceal every book for now":

By the way, I don't say this lightly. I'd also urge people to not expect fascism in the 2020s to look exactly like fascism in the 1920s. There are still shouty marches and uniforms and torches, but that's not all. Think about narratives of decline from former glory, contempt for deliberation/diversity/compromise, ethnic nationalism, authoritarianism, the idea that violence is a cleansing force, misogyny and chauvinism, homophobia and transphobia, and the "strong male leader" shtick. All there.

@bodhipaksa the Brooklyn Public Library is actively fighting book-banning by letting any teen or young adult in the US get a library card there to check out books online.

Books that are banned elsewhere have special treatment so they are "always available".

Any US teen can request a personalized reading list from the library, as recommended by a fellow teen volunteering their time.

Please pass this on to any teens in your life.

covid-19, reinfection window

for folks who have caught covid multiple times, what was the shortest time for reinfection you experienced?
(shortest reported so far: < 4 weeks)

Bij de tandarts. Als ik over een paar dagen corona blijk te hebben, was het gegarandeerd van hier. Ik zie nergens ventilatieroosters of luchtreinigers. Maar m'n ffp3 ophouden kan natuurlijk niet.

Lastige afweging die me veel stress bezorgt. Uiteindelijk doe ik het toch maar want dit is ook belangrijk, maar ik haat iedereen die deze situatie heeft veroorzaakt door de noodzaak van schone lucht niet duidelijk te benoemen en handenwassen wel.

@six_seven

It's almost like they don't realize that most Endocrinologists have very little background in trans care. And the research is sparse. Unless they've specialized, they probably don't know enough.

Very interesting article I read on how doctors essentially use the appeal to authority to get trans people to trust them.

Meanwhile, Tech Comms is doing good research on online sources of technical knowledge in the DIY HRT communities.

"Volgens het college lijkt het er bovendien op dat er met twee maten gemeten wordt."

Dat was al een tijdje duidelijk, volgens mij, maar het is mooi dat het College voor de Rechten van de Mens dat ook ziet. Vraag is of ze daar in Den Haag van onder de indruk zijn. De herhaalde gang naar de rechter naar aanleiding van de zaak-Urgenda doet het ergste vermoeden.

PSA for all Fedi instance admins and their users, "FediBlock" for a somewhat technical reason

So, you all know gup.pe, right?

Most instances out there still have data for it. However, try opening it in your browser and you will see it no longer exists. This is because it was replaced by a.gup.pe, which you will find is accessible.

This causes lots of posts sent to gup.pe groups to be entirely unfetchable for a lot of Mastodon instances due to a Mastodon bug: github.com/mastodon/mastodon/i

If you're an instance admin for a Mastodon (or derivative) instance, please take the following steps:

Go to your settings
Navigate to Moderation → Federation
Select the "All" tab (not the "Limited" tab)
Search for "gup.pe"
Select "gup.pe" (NOT a.gup.pe!)
If only a.gup.pe shows up, you're good to go.
Click the "Purge" button (Don't suspend! On Mastodon, and apparently also Akkoma (not Pleroma), suspending an apex domain will also suspend subdomains!)
If there is no "Purge" button, you might have to click "Stop delivery" first.

If you don't use Mastodon or a derivative, but other server software, please find other instructions. (Feel free to reply with instructions for other server software!)

Generally speaking, if you know an instance to be down or you know that it's just tagging a Twitter repost "instance" (I'm seeing a lot of twitter.activitypub.actor tagging posts get caught up in this, too):

If you're an instance admin, purge its data. This will work around the above bug as local users will now be unable to tag users on dead instances.
If you're a user, don't tag any users from such instances. Don't tag mutualaid @ gup.pe, tag mutualaid @ a.gup.pe
