A sincere tip for longtime fediverse people who would like their friends to stick around here longer than a week:

If you're on Mastodon or Hometown, you can click the "bell" icon in the profile of someone you follow. This will make it so that every time they post, it will appear in your notifications like an "@". I am enabling this temporarily for friends so that I remember to interact with them. This is important for making this place feel more lively and helps people stick around!

new people I do promise that outside of new user influxes, we do talk about stuff other than just activitypub design and how twitter is bad, like, uhhh, jorts and meowing

listen, i'm glad everyone is here/back but platform metacommentary alone won't be enough to make this stick. you need to start posting inane nonsense

what did you eat today. did you see any cool bugs

Don't you love it when you do the first 90% of the problem in planning only to find out there's another 90% of the problem left in finding out what the problem actually is and yet another 90% implementing it

Sure, package management is hard, but have you ever tried *packaging* management with ADHD??

(This toot brought to you by me finally cleaning out my office)

I find it kind of fascinating that there's a massive influx of new users to Mastodon and it seems that it's *not* a complete disaster. This is very rare for (comparatively) small communities! I'm very curious about why it's different from the usual "community norms overrun" in this case.

Mastodon is literally the only social network I’ve used where I feel better after having used it. Everyone is sooo nice and genuine and I feel like I can take things at my own pace.

Next on my "Getting rid of Google" list is the calendar. Would like a cloud calendar that ideally is zero-knowledge. Which ones do you like?

The fediverse today trying to explain to newcomers where they are.

I really miss the Ambassador bots, they were so good and useful for getting good posts into diverse federated timelines. 😭 Can we have those back please?

[ Context: An instance, let's say example.flowers.social, would have an Ambassador bot that RTed any public post from that instance that got over the average number of likes. If I on another instance followed that Ambassador bot, then all the good posts from that instance would also be shared into my instance's federated timeline. ]

Asking "how do I find people to follow" around here is a bit like asking "how do I find people to email" or "how do I find penpals" - people come up with ingenious ways to find each other within and outside of a decentralised system.

A good way to find cool people on the Fediverse itself is posting something like "boost if you like [hobby], I want to find people to follow," ideally including a couple of hashtags. Instant list of active users with similar interests. :D

If you're new to the Fediverse, here's what made the platform work for me: aggressively following and unfollowing new people.

Whatever standards you've built up on Twitter for deciding to follow someone, throw them out the window. Follow someone because they made a funny or insightful post. Follow someone because their bio says they like pesto. Follow someone because they have a cute fursona. Anything really.

Following is free. And if it doesn't work out, unfollowing is also free.

Long thread of other fediverse platforms

#FediverseTip Mastodon is not the only fediverse social media platform! It's based on the standard called activitypub, which implements a lot of different use cases mastodon does not! There's a lot of different types of fediverse social media out there, like pixelfed (instagram like) pixelfed.org/ or friendica (facebook like) friendi.ca/ or even peertube (youtube like) joinpeertube.org/en or funkwhale (spotify like) funkwhale.audio/

Okay, either I'm imagining things, or Mastodon is definitely sometimes posting replies as not-replies.

#introduction

'lo peeps! I'm Tatra, I'm non-binary (They/He), and I'm a UK-based developer working in education. I'm into videos, games, and occasionally making videos about games (and, if I can get my bum in gear, video essays about more important things). Follow and/or boost if those sound interesting to you! Take care out there! :)

Best transactional mail for Mastodon servers

I used Mailjet, but they only have a 200 daily limit a that is not good enough for two middle sized servers. One of the servers I switched to Sendinblue, with a 300 daily limit. Mailgun needs a creditcard for their free plan and I don't have a creditcard (most Europeans only can get a creditcard when they earn enough money).

So what is the best free transactional mail provider in 2022? If you need to pay a few euro's per month that's Ok.

#mastoadmin #mastodev #email #transactionaleEmail

Admins don't read DMs, and I'm hoping that soon enough that'll be encrypted and I won't be able too.
Mastodon DMs should be considered "restricted messages" visible to people mentioned.

DMs are not that important when snapchat exists for sexts, and signal exists for crimes!

Real chat style DMs similar to Twitter/facebook is coming to the ecosystem soon and will be encrypted and secured from admins... but until then, you need to consider "DMs" in mastodon different than the normal style.

It's more of a direct toot, then a direct message.

and in fact, the #mastodev team really should rename Direct Messages to Direct Toots or restricted because people have mental associations with the word "direct message"... and I get annoyed when I see a DM in my timeline and the back of chat style DMs..
