now obviously there's distros that don't do that, but they pull from the same pool of software, so that mentality still bleeds through in lots of ways. android and steam deck both notably go out of their way to give you something else as the frontend and default software ecosystem, and let (to varying degrees) the bold and the technically inclined peel it back if they want to. i think that's interesting

grapheneos

In past conflicts surrounding GrapheneOS I've generally avoided drawing conclusions about who's at fault (despite being asked to!) because of not having the details of the situation, and not wanting to jump to conclusions.

But let's just say that the GrapheneOS folks are very quickly changing my mind about that, and not in a good way, by continuing to post endless aggressive accusations of "attacks" and "falsehoods", often multiple of them in quick succession, without any sort of concrete detail, or seemingly even responding to people trying to start a conversation.

Like, this is throwing up *so many* red flags for me it's not even funny.

there's ample proof that linux can be distributed in ways that are non-hostile enough that every day people can use it without a significant investment into learning technical and philosophical minutiae (android, steam deck). given that many major distros still gate having a working computer on understanding the "non-free" shibboleth, I think it's reasonable to conclude the main thing holding back widespread adoption is the community is still largely not willing to meet people where they're at

(forgetting the word "euler") greaser angles

It's baffling how many applications lock up, balloon in memory use, continue doing something in the background (with the UI now missing) once you 'cancel' it, provide zero immediate UI feedback, or otherwise completely break as soon as a remote server is a bit flaky or slow to respond.

my annoyance with this has completely derailed me from what I was originally gonna complain about: umount should have a special warning if you try to umount your current working directory, because this is not the first time I've done it and then had to use lsof and search through the process table etc because I just didn't notice that I'm literally blocking it with the terminal I'm trying to unmount with and it'd save me that time to have a specific warning like that

bittorrent protocol question

Is it me or did BEP-0044 not get updated in BitTorrent v2 to use SHA256, and it's still stuck on SHA1?

food (vegan)

@joepie91 that's fair, and that is absolutely a positive thing. I just miss the shitty TVP+Food Glue+Broccoli Stem pucks that no longer seen to be available around here.

food (vegan)

The days of dry vegetable disks are definitely long gone here now. Even the cheap store-brand vegan burgers are just *nice* now.

My husband informed me of this great little website called "One Minute Park" where you get to see one minute of a park from various places in the world (and you can contribute your own)

Perfect for a minute of peace.

some plural conversation techniques

1. start a journal. choose one colour of pen or pencil for each headmate, and switch between them. pick up every pen at least once per journal entry, and give some time for the headmate to start writing before moving on. for maximum effect, establish different styles of handwriting for each headmate.

2. install the app "tweet note". this mimicks the interface of classical twitter, but fully offline, and you can create multiple accounts and alternate fast between them. it's complete with likes, boosts, replies etc. create one profile for each headmate—the whole deal with avatar, profile description, pinned toots etc.—then open it like you'd browse social media. frequently open the account-switch button and give space for headmates to pick up and reply to stuff.

3. lay a few chairs in a circle, one for each headmate. physically sit on each chair and talk, with your voice, out loud. then get up and sit on other chairs. only that person can speak on that chair. be sure to sit on all chairs throughout the conversation.

warning: conversations done in this way might be much longer than you expected and take you into directions you'd never imagine.

classifieds nonsense (3)

Honestly I don't really understand commercial sellers who sell on these classified sites. Surely this can't actually be sufficiently profitable to make a living, with all the interaction required and no way to automate any of it?

classifieds nonsense (2)

I should see if my "hide commercial spam from the classifieds site" browser plugin also supports just hiding every single commercial seller, probably

classifieds nonsense

Bid 30 EUR on a pile of 6 second-hand board games that all frequently sell on classifieds for 5-10 EUR each. Got a response "no, I want 70 EUR for those". Looked at profile; "commercial seller".

Should've seen this coming, I guess...

May 2025 be the year when people collectively agree that capitalism is just not worth it.

grapheneos (4)

And it's not like the claim here is vague or in dispute either. It essentially boils down to "GrapheneOS could include espeak, but doesn't, because of the license". That claim is *directly* confirmed by the linked post from the project, which states as much.

So where is the misrepresentation, exactly?

me: "I shall organize my cables into boxes. this box is for AC adapters, this one is for ethernet"

someone who wanted to troll me, specifically: "behold, I have invented power over ethernet"

The most important factor when selecting which hat to wear is, very obviously, does this coordinate nicely with the socks I'm currently carrying? Do not worry Bella, I've got you covered @madboy99
