The days of dry vegetable disks are definitely long gone here now. Even the cheap store-brand vegan burgers are just *nice* now.

@rallias You can still get them here! They're just not the only option anymore.

@rallias (Also the quality of cheap vegan proteins has improved *massively* here in the past year or two, in general, both in terms of flavour, texture, and nutritional content)

@joepie91 that's fair, and that is absolutely a positive thing. I just miss the shitty TVP+Food Glue+Broccoli Stem pucks that no longer seen to be available around here.

@joepie91 It's amazing that some vegan substitutes got so good, that I find eating them disturbing. Few years ago, it was easy to recognize that the burger patty and cheese in my cheeseburger are both vegan. But lately, I had to ask restaurant staff for reassurement that they didn't mess up my order.
First time it happened to me was actually in Netherlands. The cheese in my cheeseburger was really plant based, but it was impossible to guess.

@joepie91 Also aaaaaaaaa, why are vegetarian things in Netherlands called Vega. That is so confusing, and I don't even think it makes sense? It's "vegetarisch", isn't it? Why not Vege?
food (vegan)
@shine Historical reasons; "veganistisch" is originally the term for "vegan" in Dutch, and it's only fairly recently that this is anything but the most niche diet, whereas "vegetarisch" has been popularly around much longer and so got colloquially abbreviated to 'vega' because it is easier to pronounce than 'vege'

@joepie91 As someone who really likes and is actively trying to learn Dutch, I find the idea of choosing an easier to pronounce variant mildly amusing. (: /jk

@joepie91 I hate to say this too loudly, but that makes me a little sad. I liked the awful veggie hockey pucks on occasion. There was a charm to them.
