Looking for recommendations!
Please recommend me software for note-taking that is:
- Local on my own system
- Open-source
- Community-run (ie. no LLC or whatever behind it, also not an LLC that claims to be 'non-profit')
- Non-commercial - I don't just mean 'free', I mean that the maintainers clearly oppose commercial exploitation
The project asking for money is fine, as long as the above requirements are met. Likewise, it doesn't have to be well-known or 'at scale' - small projects with a small community are fine too!
Please don't suggest things like "plaintext files", I'm looking for something that is actually designed for note-taking specifically.
subtooting many people, politics (2)
And yes, there are specific issues that are *blockers*, in that it is likely impossible to solve the problem of fascism if you don't address those blocking issues.
That does not make them *causes*, and treating them as causes anyway means you're likely going to overlook *other* blocking issues.
subtooting many people, politics
I'm very, very tired of all the "this is why fascism is on the rise" political takes, which invariably try to flatten the whole issue down to a singular cause (a different one in each post), despite that being incredibly implausible with how complex people and societies are.
Like, it's okay to say "it's complicated" and start addressing the issues one by one, you know. You do not actually need to pretend that there's a simple answer, and doing so certainly isn't going to solve the problem.

security, programming
The problem with thinking in terms of "security-critical" and "non-security-critical" to determine where security is 'important', is that adversaries know this too and so what actually happens is that they hack into your "non-security-critical" system and then use that to gain access to the super-secure security-critical one
#spoonieTown has boring things like reliable and convenient public transportation.

I am still wondering, to this day, what actually happened there, how much of the criticism was genuine, and who exactly the false claims originated from and why.
I have my suspicions, but no data to back it up.
There's a nonprofit whose website I support that monitors the far right. They want to set up a mirror site in Iceland (or other country with strong data sovereignty laws) in case the Trump administration takes down their website.
Does anyone have Icelandic hosting companies they recommend? The website is in #Drupal
boosts appreciated
Thinking back for no particular reason to the US controversy among leftists about The Correspondent (one of the very few journalistic outlets in NL that actually did in-depth reporting on fascism and racism over the past decade), and how the discourse was completely littered with verifiably false claims about what had happened.
"Een kermis in de Friese hoofdstad Leeuwarden gaat niet door. De reden: een supermarkteigenaar heeft de kermisorganisator afgekocht, zodat het bedrijf geen overlast zal ervaren. Om die reden is er in april geen kermis op het Cambuurplein. Exploitanten lopen duizenden euro's mis."
Wat ben je dan een klootzak, zeg.

It really annoys me how basically every react-native related library contains duplicate implementations; one in Java/Kotlin for Android, and one in Objective C for iOS.
That's seemingly not the fault of react-native but rather of the design decisions behind these operating systems (and their corresponding devices), and I can't help but feel like as a field we've really regressed on interoperability with mobile OSes.
Nice, got the soft touch walkman with the remote for 30€. Yeah I know, 30€ is realistically too much for an obsolete device that will at least need new belts, maybe even more repairs.
I would not pay for one that needs a gumstick battery or doesn't come with the remote but finding that combination (AA-battery powered, soft touch and with remote) is hard enough.
The remote has fixed earbuds so those will be chopped off and replaced with a 3.5mm trs jack and I have velcro-attachment-thingies on the shoulder straps of my backpack to hold the remote plus a bt transmitter while the walkman can sit inside the bag.
Yes one of the reasons for me seldomly listening to music on the go is my weird preference for tape. If I had remote controllable casette changer/recorder I would totally build a thing that checks my podcast feeds and records new episodes on tape for me.
This is my third game with #PixelArt houses with a roof, but I made them much cleaner than the previous ones (and I made it so you can see the top rim thingy and the back tiles).
Hmm. I don't know how how to handle that rim with complex house shapes with the current simple autotiling system. Guess I'll just put chimneys at the intersections.

In our marketing-department imagined future of a new technology all harms will somehow disappear (details TBD), but the potential benefits are endless and extraordinary. We could cure cancer! But are any of the AI companies trying to cure cancer, as a primary goal of their work? Well, no…

Just prior to the start of the LLM boom, I was suckered into accepting a machine learning position at a big pharmaceutical company, with the assertion that we were going to be building out tooling that would assist with the discovery of new, life-saving drugs.
Once I started, it turned out that the things our department worked on were actually used to make marketing communications more effective and to decrease manufacturing costs. Sure, ML could theoretically be used for drug discovery, but that was for the individual research groups to decide and manage, and they had their own engineers and data scientists to hypothetically do it.
Technical debt collector and general hype-hater. Early 30s, non-binary, ND, poly, relationship anarchist, generally queer.
Sometimes horny on main (behind CW), very much into kink (bondage, freeuse, CNC, and other stuff), and believe it or not, very much a submissive bottom :p
Feel free to flirt, but if you want to actually meet up and/or do something with me, lewd or otherwise, please tell me explicitly or I won't realize :) I'm generally very open to that sort of thing!
Further boundaries: boosts are OK (including for lewd posts), DMs are open. But the devil doesn't need an advocate; I'm not interested in combative arguing in my mentions. I am however happy to explain things in-depth when asked non-combatively.
My spoons are limited, so I may not always have the energy to respond to messages.
Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
