Looking for recommendations!
Please recommend me software for note-taking that is:
- Local on my own system
- Open-source
- Community-run (ie. no LLC or whatever behind it, also not an LLC that claims to be 'non-profit')
- Non-commercial - I don't just mean 'free', I mean that the maintainers clearly oppose commercial exploitation
The project asking for money is fine, as long as the above requirements are met. Likewise, it doesn't have to be well-known or 'at scale' - small projects with a small community are fine too!
Please don't suggest things like "plaintext files", I'm looking for something that is actually designed for note-taking specifically.
@joepie91@social.pixie.town I think #Logseq should meet all these requirements.
AFAIK the project is funded via Open Collective, it's Free and Open Source Software. You can run it without syncing notes on both your phone and computers. If you need to sync between devices, you can set up a self-hosted sync server, so your data remains fully in your control.
It's the notetakting software I've enjoyed using most so far.
@joepie91@social.pixie.town Although there seems to be a Logseq Inc. behind it, so not sure if your last requirement is actually met. I have just not seen any indication of them "selling out" so far.
@joepie91 So, when I last did my evaluation of options, I liked Trillium Next (https://github.com/TriliumNext/Notes). It seems to have all the points you listed. It doesn't actively oppose commercial exploitation, but it is AGPLv3 which is relatively toxic for a third party commercial entity. The only reason I didn't decide to go with it is that, at least at last glance, it didn't have great Android support.
(if you're trying it out, the Linux .zip is the desktop version, the .tar.xz is the server version, which isn't necessary for running the software locally)
