My Mom built an analog ad blocker for her favorite tablet game and while I cannot stop laughing, I'm also hella proud of her. Go Mom! Stick it to the man!

#FuckTheSystem

Your periodic reminder that with 'state-sponsored attacks', usually the only thing that's certain is that it *definitely wasn't* the country that it looks like it was.

Be very, very skeptical of people trying to attribute stuff like backdoors to specific countries. Misinformation campaigns are very much on the table here.

the biggest unsolved problem in computer science is capitalism

Can anyone recommend a program for sketching out maps for #TTRPGs. Not necessarily gridded maps to play on.... but say I want to make a map of the country side or a city?

Something with pre loaded icons for things like mountains & forests. Where I can draw lakes & roads & label POIs?

open-source sustainability issues, actionable

It looks like libexpat is in trouble, and needs help from experienced C developers: github.com/libexpat/libexpat/b

What you can do:
- If you're an experienced C developer, and can commit to helping maintain it, reach out to them. I expect that they're mainly looking for long-term collaborators, not just one-off contributions.
- If not, pass it on to people you know who might be able and interested to help out.

(Note that I'm not in contact with them - I'm just passing on the message!)

meta, subtoot

I would very much like for the "concerned citizens" in question to start recognizing this pattern among themselves, and ask themselves why that is

meta, subtoot

Every single time someone is like "hey uh this is going quite far, can we not tone it down a bit" in response to community safety measures (like throwing out Facebook), *every single time*, it always seems to be a white dude

sort of negative, rimworld

I think I've figured out why I don't like to play Rimworld in the way you're "supposed" to play it (where a disaster is just another story element) - because my actual communities in my actual life already constantly get destroyed by others, and I would for once like to build something and have it actually remain a nice place to live and exist

Argh. Was listening to a recording of a liveset, and fuck whoever it was in the audience that was constantly blowing a whistle...

xz (sort of) meta, hierarchy

I find it very interesting to observe who describes Andres Freund as a "Microsoft engineer", vs. who describes them as a "PostgreSQL developer".

I feel like it tells you a lot about what someone values more - what someone actually does in society, vs. what their assigned role is in the hierarchy.

someone: you've violated the prime directive

every star trek captain: the code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules

Ah yes, spring has started, and so everyone has naturally decided that this is the perfect time to start using powertools outside all day so that it is impossible to sit outside and listen to the birds and insects

I have yet to actually work with it, so I may run into some unexpected roadblock once I do that, but... yeah

I often see people talking about how Vulkan is more low-level than OpenGL and not suitable for direct use, but honestly every time I look at it, it seems *so much* simpler to reason about and work with than OpenGL?

The abusive behavior that was being used to manipulate Lasse Collin into bringing on more maintainers for #xz went unnoticed because abusive behavior in Open Source communities is so pervasive. In context, we can clearly see it was part of an orchestrated operation. Out of context, it looks like just another asshole complaining about stuff they have no right to complain about. robmensching.com/blog/posts/20

Thirty spokes
meet in the hub.
Where the wheel isn’t
is where it’s useful.

Hollowed out,
clay makes a pot.
Where the pot’s not
is where it’s useful.

Cut doors and windows
to make a room.
Where the room isn’t,
there’s room for you.

So the profit in what is
is in the use of what isn’t.

(Dào Dé Jīng 11, translated by Ursula K. Le Guin)

"What if an AI got hyper-focused on making paperclips and destroyed us all?" asked the insufferable nerd, as corporations whose only directive is "make stock price go up" utterly destroyed the conditions favourable for human life
