Hey if you’re young, pace yourself or you’ll be spending your 30s+ never actually recovering from burnout completely.

Best case scenario you’ll take frequent breaks to try and top-up your energy but you’ll never actually get it back.

Maybe you think “I’m not going to live that long anyway” but you should try to live like you will keep living.

Or maybe you think “if I go at 500% now I’ll be able to afford the rest I need later.” but omfg no you won’t. You won’t make enough for that. You won’t.

Random polyam peeve: I DETEST the word 'throuple'. I'm in a triad.

Why the hate? The first reason is shallow. The word is ascethetically displeasing to me. It sounds more like a virus than a loving relationship. Blech.

The second reason is much more important. 'Throuple' is derived from 'couple'. This makes concept more accessible to the mainstream, but to me, it's yet another monoganormative microagression. Keep that nonsense away from my relationship.

re: French Wikipedia, queerphobia

non-queer editors often say “why is everything on these topics so personal to you? why are you bringing this fight here?”

this is why.

left unchecked, “moderate, well-meaning concerns” become “exclusions” and then “removals”.

Idle thought: when people talk about how BASIC-era computers were so much easier to tinker with, I wonder how much that wasn't because it was somehow easier or more accessible, but because back then computers still shipped with high-quality documentation on their internals

Internet safety tip [Oracle]

Hey so if a space describes itself as "the only space Minority X is safe" and you are Minority X, run like hell. It's a cult at best.

Reminder that when someone uses a slur, it's not usually the literal meaning of the term that's the really bad part

The bad part is the implied threat that they're making by saying "I can get away with saying this and no one will stop me or help you and now you have to wonder how far I might take that"

food for thought!

for the cost of a new electric car ($30-70k) & its annual insurance & maintenance ($4-10k) one could:

Purchase an electric bike & electric cargo bike for one self

and

Purchase an electric bike for several friends or folks in need

and

Rent a vehicle or pay for train fare for a number of local vacations, and rent a vehicle for hauling as needed

and

Donate meaningfully to a climate or transportation justice organization of your choice

(This relates to the earlier incident of covid denialism but it also applies more broadly)

New policy: if you do not want to openly speak your ethics, and try to justify them by hiding behind authorities, I will speak them for you, publicly

re: subtoot, nixos

@joepie91 gonna start calling AWS jeff bezos's basement

subtoot, nixos

Are there valid reasons to outsource the management to a third party? Yes, perhaps. Is it reasonable to basically make fun of people for exploring self-managed options? Absolutely the fuck not, what is wrong with you

subtoot, nixos

I am extremely judging the people who seem to believe that hosting things on a self-managed server is somehow irresponsible and is equivalent to 'basement hosting', compared to using IaaS services like an S3 provider.

Like, what exactly do you think that S3 provider is running on??? Treating 'cloud hosting' as some sort of magical thing that is materially different from 'a server' does not inspire confidence about your technical qualifications

this is your daily reminder to not be ashamed of making your life easy for yourself.

cut your food into small pieces, make the font size 30 on your e book, use straws to drink, get a pen that’s comfortable to hold, take more naps, walk slowly, buy velcro shoes, re-watch the part you couldn’t understand the first time, write things on your hands so you don’t forget it… whatever you want and/or need

don’t let anyone tell you how you should be doing things. we don’t need to prove each other anything

covid denial

Another day, another attempt at discussing event COVID safety measures that's met with someone hiding behind "no government mandate" to justify throwing vulnerable folks under the bus.

Thankfully in this case some others spoke up and a useful discussion was eventually possible.

Hot take but I believe ISPs should be legally required to let other ISPs pay for access to their infrastructure at a fair price.

Broadband infrastructure very often is a natural monopoly and these should be regulated.

"Influencer" (brag/achievement) vs. "Influencer" (burden of responsibility)

that autistic (and adhd) feeling where after social events you feel the need to lie on the floor and re-calibrate like a wii remote

Watch the others in the room. The assholes who jeer and manhandle the protestors. These are your peers in the tech industry. These are the “acceptable folks” in tech. Fuck these people.

Look at their faces. They know exactly what they’re complict in. Look at their smug smiles. Dickheads each one.
