I am extremely judging the people who seem to believe that hosting things on a self-managed server is somehow irresponsible and is equivalent to 'basement hosting', compared to using IaaS services like an S3 provider.

Like, what exactly do you think that S3 provider is running on??? Treating 'cloud hosting' as some sort of magical thing that is materially different from 'a server' does not inspire confidence about your technical qualifications

Are there valid reasons to outsource the management to a third party? Yes, perhaps. Is it reasonable to basically make fun of people for exploring self-managed options? Absolutely the fuck not, what is wrong with you

@joepie91 the worse for me is that it boils down to investing in AWS vs. investing in our community

the bucks we are throwing at 10x overpriced cloud computing can be thrown to folks in our community

(and obviously, this does not preclude analysis of the situation, saying that this is not realistic for X, Y, Z reasons)
