re: grumbling about tech complaints

These cases are thankfully rare (usually there *is* a hidden reason), but it doesn't help for my mood that the people doing this usually are those with privilege and entitlement who expect everything to be tailored exactly to their needs, and they are rather hostile towards anyone questioning it

Thanks for CW'ing the Apple event stuff, everybody!

this was my description of the group of people who leak documents on the war thunder forums

you don't have to be in the military and horny for it to play war thunder, but you do have to be in the military and horny for it to leak documents

grumbling about tech complaints

My least favourite kind of tech complaint to deal with, is the one where someone goes "I want to do X using tool Y", and Y is not designed to do that

And then you try to figure out why they want to do X specifically using tool Y, because maybe the other tools they've tried are just too hard, or they have some wrong assumption or something, or they have a really niche requirement, and you have to make sure that your recommendations fit someone's needs, right?

But no, it turns out that they really just *want* to use tool Y specifically because they've started treating it as the tool for everything, and there *is* no underlying need or concern to address

And then they insistently blame tool Y for not meeting that expectation even though it never promised to do anything of the sort

Huh, so Unity has reached the killing-the-golden-goose point of their enshittification: gamedeveloper.com/business/uni

20c per install doesn't sound like much to PC users, but that's potentially enough to nuke mobile gaming entirely. Which they know, because they also run the stats system mobile devs use to calculate ARPU/ARPPU.

Unreal taking a small cut of revenue works fine. That's based on you know, money you made.

Unity charging based on "Installs" might actually cost you money in mobile space. Or if you do a PS+ freebie. Or GamePass. Or especially an EpicStore freebie. They know what they're doing, and it's fucking evil.

EDIT: looks like it's a one time fee per install, the "monthly" is just poorly explained, as confirmed in a forums reply from a random employee, naturally

Optimisation for convenience brings out all the worst aspects of humanity.

We need to stop pretending reckless, anti-social, abusive tech use is some kind of aberration that only BadGuys™️ do, and come to terms with the fact that our increased ability to act / interact without thinking things through makes it harder for ALL of us to be the best versions of ourselves that we can be

@puf Here's some advice I find to be good on "how exactly to address bigotry in your friends group," which might be interesting to others too. captainawkward.com/2021/01/11/

if you consider all people as being capable of being more thoughtful and more caring, as i do, then there needs to space and accommodation for people at all levels of knowledge, understanding, experience and interest in supporting marginalised people.

from my experience, these spaces with accommodations for those learning will not necessarily be a restful or pleasant environment for the marginalised people themselves.

moreover, when you believe people have the capability to improve themselves, it's a disservice to them and their growth if you condone their thoughtless or hurtful behaviour. there absolutely should be consequences for patterns of uncaring behaviour in order to protect the marginalised people in the space, and also because the transgressors should feel some incentive to improve.

it is ridiculous to believe that all social spaces can and should be mixed together into one large social space, even assuming a certain level of good will and a well-meaning sentiment by the people in the space.

Unity: We need more funding for engine development, therefore we will unilaterally increase fees and start charging per installation, or you can be exempt from that if you lock yourself into our advertising platform, and it's not like you can really switch to a competitor anyway

Godot: We need more funding for engine development, therefore we will cut out the donation processing middleman so that we get to keep more of your contribution, and do an additional funding drive for those who can afford it, but don't worry if you can't contribute!

I don't know, but if I were a game developer, I'd certainly be developing some Opinions around engine choices and sustainability right about now

re: meta politics grumbling

Relatedly: Voting is one thing. But *why* would you spend a ton of time and energy on debating electoral politics? Isn't the point of electoral politics to outsource it to politicians so that you don't need to constantly concern yourself with it?

So, do that - and spend the remaining time and energy on working with others on radical, grassroots politics that actually stand a chance of materially improving the situation for marginalized folks.

You'll get a lot more results out of your time and energy that way, I promise.

The amount of leaks via Warthunder is incredible.

I'm waiting for the Warthunder Devs to release a "UFO DLC", then we'll *really* see some interesting details

Fun fact about Microsoft #Windows: if you type Ctrl-Shift-Alt-Win-L, LinkedIn will open in your default browser. This is an OS hotkey that cannot be turned off.

I know this reads like a joke but it isn't.

re: meta politics grumbling

Like, electoral politics are essentially sportsball for people who don't actually like sports. All the same mechanics of rallying around a 'team' with little substance behind it.

Electoral politics may cause some change, because of its current positioning in society as a center of power, but it sure as hell is not and never has been the driver of social change. It certainly does not protect vulnerable folks.

meta politics grumbling

You don't necessarily need to agree with everything that radical folks do, but if every single one of your 'political' posts is strictly about electoral politics and you never bother to look into or talk about radical politics at all...

Well, let's just say that it couldn't be clearer that politics is just a game to you and you cannot be trusted with the well-being of marginalized folks, regardless of whether you claim to be an ally

this is literally shocking: gamedeveloper.com/business/uni

unity has been going the adobe route for a long time, but now they've really jumped the shark.
