re: Facebook Threads
(For those unfamiliar: MAU means Monthly Active Users, and so it's measured over the past month.
"After a month" is exactly when the user surge drops outside of the measuring frame, and so everybody who tried it out and didn't return suddenly no longer gets counted. And so you *always* get a sharp drop.)
At the last tech job I worked at, the part-time CFO of the company revealed that he also owns apartment buildings in another state that he rents out. He explained that this was his main source of income. When he asked me if I rent or own my place, I told him the truth and replied that I rented.
His response? "Oh, so you're one of those people?".
I fucking hate landlords. Glad that company went under.

re: theorising about why people defend large, bad instances
I hate to summarise all arguments with "actually it's just capitalism again" but
it's just capitalism again
re: theorising about why people defend large, bad instances
like a lot of the capitalist mentality is that of a constant fight for survival, where the sole benefit is the illusion of independence in your choices
whereas in reality everyone is supported by others and breaking down the barriers to turn those people supporting you into actual people you need to care about, is a scary prospect, since before you were under the illusion you could do it all yourself
but like, you couldn't. there were people exploiting and controlling you all along. now you have the choice to choose your community, but that comes with the fear of choosing incorrectly, even though that's not nearly as bad as you'd be led to believe
theorising about why people defend large, bad instances
I think that the reason why people stay on places like mastodon.social and hate people telling them to leave and go to another instance is because they're used to being on a website run by people who don't give a shit about them, and confronting that means confronting the possibility that they won't find a place that does give a shit about them, and would have to just fuck off to nowhere
so you have this self-fulfilling prophecy of self-antagonism where if you stop fighting you cease to exist, when in reality you can just stop fighting and be fine, with the occasional requirement to actually be part of a community instead of fending for yourself

I co-wrote a cookbook for depressed people and other folks with zero spoons, only knives. It's not meant to be gourmet cooking so much as a survival guide for late stage capitalism. And you can get it for free!

Why I do not like hanging around liberals anymore
Because they're like oppression lootboxes.
The liberal viewpoint is not one of intersectionality; they might sound very progressive and recognize one or more types of oppression, but do not (wish to) recognize the way these interact, or the structure and patterns that underlie all of them.
This means that it's only a matter of time before I hear them say some extremely shitty and/or bigoted stuff about a topic that they don't recognize as a form of oppression, but I can't know upfront which topic it will be, or when it'll happen.
With my intersectional friends, I could then just point out that it's a form of oppression, and they will take it seriously, introspect, and work (over time) to understand it. Mistakes happen, but they will try to learn. All I need to do, is remind them.
With liberals, however... they do not recognize it as another occurrence of the same thing, and so I am left having to "prove" from whole cloth that yes, it really is a form of oppression, before they are even willing to put in *any* effort to understand the problem.
Every time this happens, it takes hours of my time, and energy that I do not have to spare.
I am already running on fumes most of the time, and I honestly just don't really want to hang around people who put that sort of price on not being shitty.
sims ableism rant
every single time someone has brought up in general online spaces that you can't make sims with various disabilities, including just, sims who use a wheelchair, without mods
someone says "i just don't understand why you'd want this part of real life in this game about fantasizing having a perfect life"
fuck off, first of all. cripples can have a perfect little fantasy life, *too*, and also, that's not what the sims is for everyone. get the fuck outta here with that. messy breakups happen. sims can die and become ghosts. are no sims allowed to die because death is sad and hurts your feelings too?
and i'm over the couple of disabled people on these posts saying it's Escapism so therefore they don't see the point. first, you can simply not make your sim disabled. it's like saying you want escapism from like, queer content or whatever. just don't click the button.
and if the issue is the stuff being in the game at all - what, do you want escapism from other cripples in life in general? does me being in a wheelchair just pain you too much to see because it reminds you of your own disabilities? sorry, but tough fucking luck, we're in this community together, log the fuck off or mod the cripples out of your game, i'm not putting up with not being visible or able to see myself in media because it hurts your damn feelings
i've gotten pissed off basically every time i've read into this because the sims devs basically said "yeah we'll implement disability" and then they took a while, removed the saneism trait's name and eventually icon, and then never spoke a word about it again
and you know a probable reason why they didn't? because their fanbase, the people giving them plenty of cash, said "yeah nah, this is an ableds only game actually"
edit: okay this post took off, if you wanna materially support disabled people do make sure to do something other than boosting rants on ableism. you could in fact even boost other things in addition like fundraising posts. not that i'd have any of those. https://tenforward.social/@MindmeshLink/110537963686945695
autism, "functioning levels"
figured I'd pull it out of the thread and make it its own post
I'm pretty sure "high functioning" and "low functioning" is just a measure of how well you can mask and executive-function and otherwise pretend to be neurotypical.
The reason we don't, like, slap our thighs to internal music when we're in public is /purely/ because we learned to hide it.
Doing stuff like that in public doesn't make you "low functioning" it just means you don't give a shit what people think. :3
