if you're posting paywalled articles to the fediverse
consider three things:
1) the wayback machine
2) 12ft.io
3) not fucking doing that
i see peeps citing this article
https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/23/23771599/command-line-musk-versus-zuckerberg
to say gargron was definitely at a meeting with meta
BUT IT'S FUCKING PAYWALLED
neither archive.org nor 12ft.io will break the goddamn paywall
this is annoying as fuck
does anybody actually have a way i can fucking read this without paying money?!?!?
meta, racism
So I had a slightly deeper look at one of the dudes commonly cited by media as complaining about the 'splintering' of fedi because of fedipact (and just generally being pro-Facebook), and well
Zero surprise, dude is a wealthy white dude, "entrepreneur", and has a BLM-related blogpost where he calls himself "anti-racist", then proceeds to argue pacifism by cherrypicking MLK and talking a big game about "standing as an ally" while making zero personal commitments
"Reddit has far too many managers from FAANG doing nothing but playing politics"
"[Discord's] marketing department imported a lot of MBAs and ex-Meta brand directors since mid-2022, and their jobs seem to be: DDoS attack ICs with micromanagey demands, pile sudden landslides of work on people due to poor planning, and hiring their friend's agencies to do unusably shoddy work and write redundant market research that’s already been done before."
This seems to be a trend in big centralised services: "ex-FAANG" managers coming in for their CIA sabotage manual any% runs
first real evidence of how Facebook is attempting to body snatch mastodon right now
this is how capital works, by picking folks off one by one, forcing each person to reckon with their private morals and egos and ambition over personal e-mail

💜Edit! Since this is doing numbers pls consider strengthening fedi by showing up for Black mutual aid on here. donate & share this post: https://mas.to/@BlackAzizAnansi/110578230247454709
re: meta, facebook, angry
Oh and don't go "well I didn't know that things would turn out this way" - if you'd fucking *listened* when people expressed their distress instead of looking for the nearest argument to dismiss it, you'd have known
meta, facebook, angry
I'm seeing more and more desperate posts from people who feel like even fedi isn't a safe place for them to be in anymore, with instance admins being happy to invite Facebook in and put other people at risk in doing so.
Are you fucking happy now, "we must be open and grow" people? Are you happy that the *one* place trying to safeguard vulnerable people, now also caters primarily to your desires instead? Was it fucking worth it?
More of this rebellion, please. The corporate dollar isn’t threatened by giving “unsellable” food and expired products to folks in need. There’s always some “business reason” to throw things away, but that’s entirely apathetic. This is the way. Raise your fist and fight that shit. Leave the goods out. E someone who helps.

How a Fediverse newbie sees the "Where do I sign up" question:
🤦 Right, so mastodon.art is for posting about art, mastodon.gamedev.place is for posting about the game I'm not making, yiff.life is for posting shirtless Robin Hood pics, christ which facet of my personality do I fragment across which servers
The important thing that isn't written down where the newbie can see it:
the artists on mastodon.art are posting recipes and random showerthoughts, the game devs on mastodon.gamedev.place are posting pictures of their socks, the furries on yiff.life are chatting about lumberjackery and they're all replying and riffing and chatting about everything in a big soup; none but the most terminally optimistic admin is demanding nor expecting or even at this point tbh even *hoping* that any given server stays "on topic"
The newbie:
🤦 I cannae decide, and I don't wanna sign up for different servers for all my different hobbies and identities and general Ingredients Of The Lumpy Stew That Is Me, I'll go for a general-purpose server with a lot of people on it. Oh hey this one's just for being generally social, it even ends with .social, that'll do, job done
The reality is that the bubble never should have gotten as big as it did in the first place. I can't tell you how many folks in tech I've known that have told me something along the lines of "yeah I basically don't do anything at my job" and I can guarantee you it's because there's just not enough work to keep everyone busy. It's not scope creep, it's just the fact that the product doesn't need to be as big as you're making it. That's *your fault*, techbros.
I wish I could be one tenth of the organizers these people are, just being in their presence was dazzling
The diversity of the tactics, the pinpoint focus, and their ability to recognize exactly where we needed to be, if that was in city hall demanding comment on a vote, or if that was at the doors of the police station tearing down their fences, or if that was outside occupying space
They knew exactly what the fuck they were doing
It was by any means necessary and sometimes the necessary means were engaging with the city council, and sometimes the necessary means were blowing tire smoke into the cockpit of a police tank. At all times they knew exactly what the fuck was going on.
