People keep acting surprised at the direction Reddit's taking, but it seemed inevitable. If you try to build community on a platform that's not owned by that community this will happen every time. You can protest, you can even attack the bottom line (which is the only thing that will get you anywhere), but at the end of the day you have no power and they'll just block you and re-add your deleted posts. Don't trade community ownership and power for convenience or you'll get burned every time.

Meta

It's not lost on me that with the information we have so-far on who these meeting invitations from Meta were extended to, they have been extended exclusively to admins of large and growth-orientated instances and not a single one to instances ran by prominently queer people, or Black people, or People of Colour etc. Isn't that funny*??

*predictable

meta, subtoot

I just seen this one steaming ass hot shit pile of take that went something like "preemptive blocking is giving up the Fediverse's leverage against Meta".

Leverage?

Wtf are you talking about bro? Are you so terminally online and privileged that everything is some adversarial game and that we should wait for a good time to strike (or whatever other abstractions you pulled from some SpikeTV movie)? Like no, fuck all that.

Keep them bigoted, war criminal, data selling, dictator installing pieces of shit out of reach of our communities.

meta grumbling

I swear, some of these instance admins shouldn't be in charge of a goldfish, let alone a social network instance

Meta

If Meta can't show the basic curtsey of entering this network with the open-ness and transparency people expect from open networks, how can we expect them to ever be trustworthy or acting in good-faith? *Especially* given their proven track record of already being *actively dangerous* at a global scale in a humanities sense.
We have no obligation to sit at the table with these people. Get them blocked, and get them blocked before they even arrive

@ZaneSelvans I think we also need some general re-evaluation of what makes a "co-operative" in the US. For example, it's basically impossible to have a bootstrapped "garage" startup where I am, because a co-operative corporation is obligated to pay its members minimum wage from the get-go, and all founders are workers, so...

Not that I'm against requiring minimum wage in general! It's just that I, personally, as a founder, would not be allowed to forgo the choice of postponing income until the company can afford it.

meta meta meta (not serious)

so right now, every meta post is also meta meta because, apart from being about the meta, it's also about meta, which is whole another level of meta, so i just had to make a meta (meta meta meta) post about it

Moments like these remind me how many people are in this space because they want to play out their tech CEO fantasies instead of building social media networks that truly exist outside of corporate interests.

So many people really cannot think outside of that context.

there is actual precedent for Facebook adopting federated software

this is not the first time

it is not a good precedent

a post about how Facebook was directly responsible in stirring up ethnic genocide in Myanmar due to the lack of moderation of hate content.

you either disable registrations as a hero, or leave them open long enough to become a villain

Pay attention to the people that are advocating to give Meta, one of the most destructive sources of bigotry and hate on the web, a chance.

Remember who is saying this.

re: meta (both), stux, mstdn.social

Oh and I"m sure that they're also not going to notice that all the users cheering on their defed decision, originate from instances that have been widely blocked for originating bigotry

Because you know, why *would* you pay attention to such a thing, it's not like they've done so before

Meta

This NDA stuff is showing who Meta consider to be the shot-callers within this network, and also which of those shot-callers recognise themselves as such. I thought this was an *open* network; Why are these discussions happening behind closed doors?
If Meta have no intention of embrace, extend, extinguishing this place they'd tell us what they're making. If the shot-callers here care about the health and diversity of the network they'd not allow themselves or anyone to become shot-callers

meta (both), stux, mstdn.social

Actually, you know what, fuck the subtoots. I'm growing extremely tired of stux, of mstdn.social fame. This is far from the first time that they're being dangerously naive about community management.

Apparently they're not willing to block FB, because they want to "give them a chance" (after how many years of widespread abuses and zero consequences?)... which is already pretty sketchy, and the rationale ("they say they want to join, not take over") is incredibly naive.

But worse than that, they've now defederated mastodon.art. Why? Not because of long-standing moderation issues... but because they don't like the call-outs of problematic servers, and the organizing against FB/Meta.

Like, go fuck yourself and your pseudo-centrist bullshit, dude. You are actively part of the problem.

subtoot

"This contact was about a "heads-up" for a potential big platform to join the network and not for a "take over"."

Yes, that's *how community takeovers work*, they don't typically tell you that it's gonna be a takeover from the start... jesus, the gullibility

Look, I have complicated feelings about Meta and them coming to the fedi, but 'giving them the benefit of the doubt' is not remotely one of them.

That platform has been one of the most violent purveyors of bigoted violence and the planet, and somehow, magically, they are going to change overnight if they come to the fedi??

That level of naivety is the exclusive purview of white men with no skin in the game.

That is an absurd stance to take that directly endangers everybody, not white, straight, and male.

meta / Meta / Eugen Rochko

Eugen Rochko of Mastodon gGmbH fame, being a core member of EUnomia (working with cops) fame, being hired by Purism to entirely remove the report feature from their Mastodon fork fame, funnelling people towards obscenely big and badly moderated flagship instance within a federated social network for growth and influence fame, rarely open to any sort of constructive community criticism fame, is having secret meetings with Meta. An other day at the office for him, really?
