practical meta stuff
Okay so like, widely defederating Meta/Facebook is important, but we also need to start thinking about what to do once they start influencing the development direction of upstream Mastodon (because this is extremely likely, given Gargron's NDA meeting).
Can we rely on any existing forks to withstand this sort of pressure? Are they in need of more contributions, funding, support, etc.? Is a new fork needed? What steps need to be taken to ensure that Facebook cannot still exert influence over our spaces through the software?
Meta meta
Reasons to block the Facebook extended universe:
There is no fucking way they want to integrate with a growing Indy network. Why would they build competition? I would bet serious money that their internal memos are actively clear about Embrace Extend Extinguish. If bootlicker or fashy instances want to get caught up in that, let them.
Their internal memos will be even clearer about data harvesting.
If meta wants to join the unmoderated wing of fedi, they'll fit right in - or barely notice. They are thousands of times bigger than all of us put together. We can't keep them out of ActivityPub, but we don't need to be part of their disaster.
💬 "sign The Pact and defederate meta today!!!"
Some fediverse instance admins: “How cool, Meta invited us to the adult table.”
Yes, they did.
Because you’re what’s for dinner.

We have blocked:

Meta meta, NDAs, and union busting techniques
It is pretty frustrating to see folks' credulity and craving for attention/importance being exploited in real time.
This whole 'meet with some admins and make them sign NDAs' thing reminds me very much of union busting tactics. You (megacorp) are picking out the chosen few who crave love from daddy corporation, and convincing them selling out is the best thing to do for their community. It immediately creates division and identifies weak points for strategic exploitation later on.
It's like, super transparent. Maybe we should be looking to anti union busting techniques to help us out here.
How do unions successfully deal with corpos trying to have closed-doors meetings with select community leaders?
Meta meta, hilarious, subtoot (kinda? not of any of you)
"But let's not "block everything by default" but first check. You won't be happy if your admin starts blocking things without even checking them first."
Says guy who is an owner of the second-largest fedi instance who has, just a couple of hours before saying that, blocked, instance-wide, another large instance, on two minutes notice, irreversibly breaking tens of thousands of existing mutual relationships for thousands of his users, because (checks notes) he personally didn't like the admins of that other instance being vocally anti meta/facebook.
You can't make this shit up.
The moderates will side with the oppressor, always.
facebook meta
i put the fediverse in the same social context as a neighbourhood barbecue on the street that has gotten slightly out of hand. now imagine the landlord of the apartment block around the corner proudly announces "while we cannot announce all the details, we are looking forward to inviting the whole country to your back yard, together with our new partner sodexo"
pre-emptive #fediblock for meta's project92

they're not up yet but it looks like this is where they'll be
Hello my peeps who followed my account on masto.ai. I've transferred my account to here (solarpunk.moe) as a response to masto.ai not 'preblocking' the new #meta instance.

Imagine going "we need to talk to FB under NDA, because they'll be coming for us either way and we need to be ready for it", completely skipping over the step of "how do we keep them out" and just giving up the community before even starting
Like, what does that say about you as a community admin, and your ability to keep your users safe?
I hate the damage exclusionism has done to particularly baby queers. Yes you can be a bi lesbian and you can be trans with no dysphoria, I promise nobody actually cares about that except chronically online people.
The entire concept of being queer is having your identity not fit in a box, contradictory identities are welcome by design. Please stop worrying about it and just do what makes you happy
Reddit yada yada
I'm absolutely loving this spirit of malicious compliance that's creeping into the subreddits that have been forced to reopen.
/r/pics started it off by holding a vote where their users overwhelmingly said that the only pics they wanted were ones of John Oliver looking lovely.
Now /r/WellThatSucks is purely a place to post pictures of vacuum cleaners.
And /r/iPhone is only permitting posts that are pictures of Tim Cook.
All of these policy changes have been voted and agreed upon by the subreddits' users, so Reddit can't even complain that the mod teams are going against their users' wishes.
In the process of moving to @joepie91. This account will stay active for the foreseeable future! But please also follow the other one.
Technical debt collector and general hype-hater. Early 30s, non-binary, ND, poly, relationship anarchist, generally queer.
- No alt text (request) = no boost.
- Boosts OK for all boostable posts.
- DMs are open.
- Flirting welcome, but be explicit if you want something out of it!
- The devil doesn't need an advocate; no combative arguing in my mentions.
Sometimes horny on main (behind CW), very much into kink (bondage, freeuse, CNC, and other stuff), and believe it or not, very much a submissive bottom :p
My spoons are limited, so I may not always have the energy to respond to messages.
Strong views about abolishing oppression, hierarchy, agency, and self-governance - but I also trust people by default and give them room to grow, unless they give me reason not to. That all also applies to technology and how it's built.
