@GrapheneOS If the thread were 'very clear', I wouldn't be asking for a bulletpoint list.

@GrapheneOS @J3317 @evilcookies98 @darkyen Better options such as? And didn't you say two posts ago in this thread that "unless there's a good one we can use, this is blocked", implying that there isn't one?

food (vegan)

@shine Historical reasons; "veganistisch" is originally the term for "vegan" in Dutch, and it's only fairly recently that this is anything but the most niche diet, whereas "vegetarisch" has been popularly around much longer and so got colloquially abbreviated to 'vega' because it is easier to pronounce than 'vege'

@StaceyCornelius This is a bit tangential maybe, but I wonder if marketing yourself as an "off-hours plumber" (which is to say, evening plumber) might work there to work independently (ie. less sexism) and avoid the early jobs, while also being able to charge more?

Doesn't solve the nasty work part of course.

Kingfisher appreciation post.

These birds are one of my favourites found here on Vancouver Island. They are feisty, active, and can be challenging to photograph up close without disturbing them making it that much more rewarding when they pose for you.

@StaceyCornelius Yeah, I can see that being a problem ☹️

The one other thing I can think of is that plumbing apparently pays well and has been paying well for a long time, so maybe something similar is possible there, but I don't know if it pays well *enough* to reduce the hours worked

@StaceyCornelius (I do follow a slightly different version of this approach, for ethical reasons; I still provide lower rates for non-commercial customers and smaller businesses, but only after talking to them for a while and being reasonably confident that they will be respectful of my time and energy)

@StaceyCornelius Since you already seem to be doing freelance(?) things, a bit of relevant but counterintuitive advice that's not given frequently enough: the more you charge, the less expectations customers have from you, and the more likely they are to hire you.

For me this has helped tremendously in reducing the stress in my life and allowing me to recover; by charging more, I've been able to both reduce my needed working hours *and* also remove much of the stress involved, because it turns out that this swiftly eliminates the "demands the world for a penny under impossible deadlines" category of customer.

Any #neurodivergent folks have tips for rebuilding after recovering from burnout?

I've given up on getting a proper assessment or even being heard by my so-called primary care provider, so ADHD meds are a pipe dream.

So I need to figure out how to earn a living without crashing again, which means 40-hour weeks and commuting are a no-go.

I do not feel particularly confident at this point tbh.

@smveerman Huh. All the stores here in the center of Rosmalen (2x Jumbo, 1x Lidl) have self-checkouts and they don't seem to have these issues...

Lidl does have stock management issues nowadays but that seems to coincide with a change of manager, and predates the addition of self-checkouts

and then popcorn munchers are like "why is art is so corpo and so shit nowadays waaaaahhh" my sibling in christ because all the artists that are worth it are barely making ends meet you fuckos. do you think i dream of living like this? fuck no. give me a house that i won't lose and a stable supply of food and meds so i don't die and then we'll talk

@mynameistillian In an increasing number of places, you might *actually* be talking to ChatGPT, unfortunately 😕

More pics of the pied-billed grebe nest. I watched mama bird get settled to the nest and all five babies trying to push themselves under mom's feathers. You can see their little stripey faces. Look at the yawn! So adorable I feel like I'm going to melt 😭

re: grapheneos

@hyperreal That could be a legitimate criticism on the writing, but certainly not something that warrants several angry tirades that then use this as an excuse to dismiss the original criticisms and pause work on accessibility entirely, not in the least because the author of the post is reliant on such accessibility mechanisms and therefore already structurally disadvantaged. It's kind of absurd to expect/demand perfect writing under those circumstances.

Which is why I don't trust GrapheneOS in this exchange, in the slightest.

Anyone got a favorite C, C++, or python drawing API that at minimum provides rendering polygons and lines of text? I'm looking for something that is fast to set up and sketch things out without having to fuss with lots of custom boilerplate. Basically looking for alternatives to Cairo and PyGame. My priorities are fast, easy to set up, reasonably simple API, and a permissive license.

EDIT: leading candidates are openframeworks, allegro5, and thorvg or lvgl. honorable mention: godot turduckin

i should as probably clarify that i'm of the disinterested opinion that android and steam should not be aspirational for linux developers, simply because android and steam already exist and maybe we shouldn't waste our efforts giving people a half hearted alternative to something that already works well for them. i don't think linux "should" be any one thing. i think it's at its best when it can be a lot of different things, but that means people developing for it often work cross purposes
