Re. mastodon.art/@Curator/11440004 , it's been a week and we've seen nothing to indicate that Fosstodon will be changing for the better any time soon, and so we have defederated from the instance.

This has severed all existing connections between people on mastodon.art and fosstodon.org, and will prevent any further communication between our instances (e.g. you won't be able to find or follow people on Fosstodon, and they won't be able to find you).

I hate how "expecting <person> to do <thing>" can mean two completely different things; believing that they will do a thing, vs. holding them accountable if they don't.

I also hate how much more effort it takes to talk about collectivist ideas and responsibility, than it does to talk about individualism and personal benefits, because people just aren't used to talking about it and so constantly misunderstand/misassume things

@Qyriad Sure, but that isn't what the widespread complaining is about.

in celebration of mental health awareness month i won't be having any of either mental health or awareness :neobot_blep:

@skye Alright :) Offer remains open for unspecified amount of time, in case you end up needing it later anyway. Good luck!

Literally just a button that says "Buy .epub file, $5 (works on any device)" would replace the massive stack of "Buy on Kobo" "Buy on Amazon" "Buy for Nook" "Buy on Apple Books" "Buy from the Google Play store" literally why do people play along with this farce, why make it all so bloody pointlessly complicated

So much work has been done to convince people that "socialism" "communism" "anarchy" etc. are all completely non-viable.

If they were non-viable, then why would they need to try so hard to destroy them?

If you're on the fence about anarchism, consider this: is it possible that the reason you don't think it can work is because of brutal repression from the ruling class?

Anarchism would mean that they would only be as good as everyone else, would receive the same treatment, have the same amount of input & the same obligations and responsibilities. Of course they do everything in their power to kill it. They don't want to be equal.

Is it possible that they crush it because it might succeed?

@ktemkin Ik vind het terecht. Het is uiteindelijk de taak van de gemeente om te zorgen dat medewerkers met buitenlandse documenten om kunnen gaan (of er iemand bij halen die het wel snapt).

@skye If you'd like, I can help you with doing it in Node.js, via Matrix. Usually when I tutor folks on this stuff it's ~2-3 hours a week of discussing what they got stuck on, and otherwise self-study and experimentation (with me providing learning resources where I have them). Would that help?

(No cost)

The entire 'recommended for you' box on the IKEA site for me is just different sizes and combinations of SAMLAs...

and they're not wrong

What do you folks do for backups these days? I used to use a drobo RAID array for all my stuff, but the company and the device died and all my data is stuck on drives that i can't decrypt. I'm looking for something more resilient and long-lasting. A lot of it is raw footage so it's a couple terabytes of data.

This happened again today

🦝 Oh cool, a local solarpunk author with a neat blog, I will go and buy their book

🦝 I wonder if I can just buy it on their website and they'll email me the .epub or let me download it

🦝 That would be the easiest way, and would work on any phone, computer, tablet or ereader made since around 2007, so I bet that's what I'll find on their website

🦌 how about eleven (11) different links to buy the book in eleven (11) different ways from eleven (11) different stores

🦝 Will one of them work with my ereader

🦌 no

🦝 Cool

For reasons not truly known to anyone, one of our state funded free-to-air tv channels* broadcasts The Fifth Element, five times in a row, on May 5th. Last year they only showed it once and people were offended, so this year it's once again five times in a row.

*SBS Viceland.

bitter, politics, personal

So, all of those people who have been complaining at me for years that "you just call everything you don't like fascist" and "you're overreacting".

Are you going to admit your error and reflect on how you got this so wrong? Or are you just going to pretend that you were taking the threat seriously all along?

Hundreds of thousands of Computers won't be able to upgrade to Windows 11, but that shouldn't make them eWaste.

Kudos to the @kde team for this amazing initiative!

i don't know how as a tall and fat person i only just now discovered what a good idea is reserving a seat next to the emergency exits when flying. my wife and i often reserve seats anyway so we sit together, and when available, to get extra leg room, but the emergency exit offers more leg space, more hip space (as the row is rarely occupied) and at a lower seat reservation cost, all for the small price of agreeing to pull a lever if necessary.
i get that for some it may be stressful, and i get why many avoid it. but if you don't mind those are literally the best seats in the plane.
