One of the interesting things, as we begin to test out the federated model of social media at scale, is that having a rule of “I don’t have to put up with any dipshits” is getting a lot of pushback from the dipshits.

honestly if you need a whole 'council' with members and a process to try to convince people online that you're not a shit head, you are probably a shit head

jokes aside, the fact that these knobheads get so mad about defederation kinda suggests to me that defederation works quite well to isolate and disempower them, so that's nice

"About pineapple on pizza?"
"No, the other thing."
"About favourite movies?"
"No, the, y'know, *other* thing. You know the one"

@doot@glitterkitten.co.uk I count two Soapbox instances(!) and a whole lot of single-user/group instances on that frontpage

Apple has finally killed its ill-conceived plan to scan photos for CSAM. This is a direct result of work by experts and activists. Speaking up is important and sometimes we win.

i just saw credits for an old dos game where they put their "catering" in the credits, including their local pizza place

we should bring that back. that should be a thing

It continues to boggle my mind how not a single travel booking system seems to accommodate the usecase of "go pick someone up, therefore 1 person in one direction and 2 people on the return trip"

Yes, I know that no win is permanent and victory is rarely complete. The work is never done. But if we don't stop to celebrate when we do win, then we will turn into burnt-out husks who cannot carry on the fight.

@y3mz Hm, that doesn't seem to show STL export if you're not logged in... here's the current STL (link expires in 14 days): transfer.sh/ISitNx/Part%20Stud

@y3mz Design is here, so go wild :p (CC0/WTFPL):

It probably won't print correctly yet though, I still need to fix a bunch of the supports, it seems that only a few printers have good enough part cooling to print the current design without drooping bridges, so I'd recommend waiting for the final revision :D

@elfwizard I maintain that "takes issue with the vagueness of the test questions" is a more accurate test than any test that one could deliberately write

My stackable/modular HDD tray "rack" design is working! I do need to reduce the stiffness of the locking latch though, it really requires a lot of force right now to slide a drive in (see video).

@technomancy @ehashman Well, that's precisely the problem - I've certainly already been talking about this a lot to people, and criticizing the "free software" movement and the largely imaginary ethical values it encompasses.

But those are only *individual* actions, and more should presumably be possible when working together on this with others. But what exact shape that takes, I'm not sure yet :)

Like, I certainly have my ideas on how these sorts of ideals can be promoted in practice (and do apply them every day), but I also don't really want to be the next RMS-esque BDFL figure who has a Grand Master Plan, so I figured it'd be useful to at least 'sign my attendance' in case there are plans by others for something more organized :p

Git merge is an awesome feature because it lets you take two working branches and turn them into a single non-working branch.

FOSS bros: If you don't like something on Linux, you can just use a distro that has what you want! Problem solved!!

Me: Is there even a single distro that has usable scroll bars?

FOSS bros: If you don't like something on Linux, you can just write an entire window manager from scratch and—

MAPPA VIAE LACTEAE: A map of the Milky Way galaxy in the style of a 16th century cartographer.

"The art of cartography has seemingly been forgotten in this modern age of cosmic exploration. ... So here, I have attempted to channel the geographers of the first Age of Exploration, and make a map of our galaxy in their style."

Here's a thought: self-hosting all technology, a common end goal of many software freedom enthusiasts, has nothing to do with freedom. Rather, it's the logical end of hyper-individualism applied to source code.

@ehashman @technomancy FWIW, I'd be happy to contribute to such movements where I can (and can take on a reasonable amount of heat harassment-wise).
