so I'm gonna boost any info I think is useful, but the main thing I would say to any newcomers is to take your time with it all
it's a confusing place to get your head around at first and ESPECIALLY when everyone is posting their advice and opinions on how you should and shouldn't use the site. if you try and take it all in at once you'll probably be bamboozled
instances can be changed later. you don't have to form your opinions on fediverse etiquette or jump into discourse straightaway. and if it feels like too much you can turn off the computer
@Siph Definitely shouldn't be that way, no. I have QC35s, and (after an initial few days of an uncomfortable sense of 'air pressure') they just sound like I'm in a mostly sound-insulated room, with some sounds coming through in a muted-but-not-distorted sense. The degree of muting does decrease as the pads wear out, though.

CW Request for long posts and threads
It highly depends on your server, but you're blessed with 500c or more here.
Adding a CW when you're threading means you can at a glance show people what it's about, where the conversation changes etc.
You can view it as a subject line, if that helps.
And people can open the entire thread and expand it with the click of a button.
We still read it, we just appreciate to be able to opt in.
And again, it also makes filtering easier when the words are in the CW.

Switched to grain-free cat food, and it definitely seems to be helping with my cat's thyroid issues, but sheesh that stuff is expensive...

Hi. Pretty please use the CWs for musk & Twitter.
A lot of us are here because we want to get away from both Twitter and especially Elon Musk and all the talk about it.
Heck back in the day no one even said the T word here, only birdsite or hellbird.
CWs allow us to opt in. And it can make filtering easier too.
I will continue to repost content with a CW instead of boosting.

@ghost_bird I mean, if I'm not misremembering, birdsite will show a "please confirm this was you" box in your notifications after logging into a new session, and expect you to confirm it... from the new session you just logged into 🤦
@f0x Ah, hrm. Isn't it possible to federate a message as 'unlisted', causing the other instance not to show it to other users? Because it's kinda annoying to not be able to contact known-good users who happen to be on eg. poorly-moderated servers

I've actually been here for a while already, though mostly inactive! The Birdsite Situation prompted me to pop in here again. And I'm terrible at writing introductions, so I usually just say "I do stuff on the internet".
But uh, I do all sorts of activist-y stuff, work on radical FOSS (see http://cryto.net/~joepie91/manifesto.html), write (educational) stuff, am more or less a lonely polyamorous gender blob of indeterminate sexuality who likes both cuddles and kinky things, and I always have 10 times as many projects as I have time for, as is customary with ADHD brain :) Sometimes I even finish some of them!
While I'm an introvert and need plenty of time to myself, I *am* happy to meet like-minded people and spend time with them, and as long as you're not a bigot or apologist, you should feel free to interact with me and/or follow me!
Also, I live in Rosmalen (near Den Bosch) in the Netherlands, and honestly would like to get to know more local folks, and I also have some vague intention to start a queer hackerspace around here if I can find enough interested people. Eventually!

I kinda wonder why Mastodon doesn't let you 'override' an instance block on a per-user level with explicit communication? So they still wouldn't appear in the federated timeline, but at least you can follow/message them directly. Seems like an obvious mitigation to the "instance admin wars" problem...
