Hey, so, in light of Microsoft killing off Windows 10 in October (digipres.club/@misty/114190352)...

If you want more people to use Linux, now would probably be a good time to start talking to your friends and relatives about how Linux will still work and get updates and, most importantly, *offer to help them setting it up and keeping it working*.

And ideally, take notes of what problems they run into, because those notes are going to give you a pretty good idea of what needs changing for Linux to become more widely usable to people. Maybe you could even contribute some of the fixes yourself!

I really can't get over how irresponsible it is for MS to tell people to throw away or recycle perfectly working computers. There are so many machines people *could* keep using for much longer if not for Windows 11.

Everything checks out with this thing, voltages are good, given everything a damn good wiggle and it's stubbornly refusing to fail like it's supposed to

@betalars@chaos.social The trick for this kind of thing is usually to find the local(-ish) electronics shop, rather than the big chain, because the salespeople at the latter are not really trained to do anything more than read off the box.

Unfortunately such local shops do not exist everywhere anymore... I got lucky in that we do have one of those here.

I also love the discussion threads that are all like "oh but that's a myth, Edison didn't 'rip off' Tesla, he just ran a company that Tesla worked for and that patented the company's intellectual property"

My guy, my dude, etc.

Hot take: anyone trying to market their company as being "inspired by Nikola Tesla" is more like Thomas Edison than they are like Nikola Tesla.

(You know, the Edison whose whole shtick was to run a tech company that patented their employee's work and so falsely claimed credit and extracted profits)

@welshpixie Building a community around a product that has an offensive name will surely be a welcoming and healthy community that will grow to an extent that could rival commercial alternatives.
Nothing problematic or toxic could ever thrive in that environment for sure

The Pebble smartwatch team shares all of the ways Apple prevents other smartwatches from doing the same thing that Apple Watch does.

Your smartwatch can’t send texts, respond to notifications or talk to iOS apps unless it’s an Apple Watch. No one is allowed to build a device that connects to an iPhone as well as an Apple device.

@Dee Briefly reminded of my time stocking shelves as a kid, asking someone "hey are you sure we should be stacking these applesauce jars three high, they're kind of unstable", only to be told "nah it's fine"

... followed by a crash and breaking glass noises several minutes later

@aei@pleroma.envs.net Ah, but see, this does not account for enterprise environme-

"Maak op tijd een afspraak om je verlopende ID-kaart te vervangen, want het kan zo'n 6 weken duren voor je aan de beurt bent."

Meanwhile, de website van de gemeente:

I have some not-at-all-tech-savvy acquaintances who, without realizing how problematic the platform was, mentioned wanting "to start a substack or something".

I've already warned them away from the nazi bar, but I'm unsure what the current better options are for folks unable to host their own sites and services.

I'm likely to get a chance to offer suggestions here.

Got any recommendations that don't assume the user is also a sysadmin?

If you have a rooted phone do not uninstall Bunq or you'll have a hard time getting in with their new login flow.... (previously a hackers choice of bank as they didn't do root checks)

@clacksee@wandering.shop I wonder if they are just filing it under "digital goods" or so without further specification.

Do not travel to the US. Under any circumstance. Think you're safe because your paperwork is in order? Fuck you, it does not matter.

@rune Weirdly I didn't get any side-effects from the latest update (which would've been my third), whereas I did get some from the first two. I guess the body eventually stops responding so strongly because it's seen something similar before?

It's probably a good thing that I updated my COVID vaccination to the latest patch level right before my transplantation...

This Talgo 106 is really weird

The ride is at one level serene - you don’t get the big movements of the carriages as much as on, say, a ICE

But the small vibrations are terrible. Everything rattles, especially the bottoms of the widow blinds that shake incessantly
