re: hot take, subtoot

This applies doubly so for *security* advice, which is what this is originally subtooting.

hot take, subtoot

If you defend bad advice in an article with "it's just boilerplate", you're just confirming that the advice is bad, actually.

Don't give authoritative-sounding advice if you understand the subject so poorly that you have to resort to boilerplate.

politics

@ainmosni @Anke I don't think it is, honestly; authoritarianism is just hierarchy again (just without any decorum to hide it, this time).

politics

@ainmosni @Anke That I agree with; I tend to avoid the terms for that reason. But if they must be used, then the egalitarian vs. hierarchy is the only internally consistent definition I've seen of, that also actually matches the real-world usage closely enough to be useful :p

politics

@ainmosni @Anke That's collectivism vs. individualism; though those map very closely onto egalitarian vs. hierarchical, because the purpose of individualism is to gain an advantage over others (which is a goal provided by hierarchy) whereas the purpose of collectivism is to collectively move ahead everyone's well-being (which is an egalitarian measure).

Cases of individualism masquerading as collectivism notwithstanding (eg. authoritarian 'communist' governments).

politics

@ainmosni @Anke I mean, this may end up being a definitional issue, but by the only definition I've ever found that makes sense (left = egalitarian, right = hierarchical), bigotry *has* to exist on some level for right-wing ideology to function, because there needs to be a 'lesser' class of people for a 'justified' hierarchy to be able to exist.

I swear fedi is the only place on the internet where I regularly see shit like:

"CW: software development, open source, kink, nsfw, drugs"

and I absolutely love it

thinking of how formerly open source corporate like Red Hat or HashiCorp are migrating to more restrictive licenses because they don't want the Big 5 to appropriate their labour, while FOSS people still reject ethical and anti-capitalist licenses in favour of Freedom 0 dogma, even after being repeatedly backstabbed by Apple, Google etc. and after watching their free labour bankroll the likes of Anduril or the IDF.

@scanlime My *suspicion* would be that even if someone offered it, this would be close to unusable for latency reasons; even supposedly latency-tolerant mounts (like sshfs or samba mounts) often end up breaking stuff because of this, so I imagine that an assumed-fast link like iscsi might be even worse :/

PSA: how to keep using ublock origin on chrome
a lot of people are using this as an opportunity to switch to firefox, but some people need to keep using chrome for some things, or just prefer it in general. so:

The cool thing about cracked adobe products is that blocking their access to the internet is usually part of the crack. Piracy and privacy are besties

Too many people don't know how to handle a situation where formerly foundational concepts like "facts" and "the rule of law" are flouted by some and embraced by others.

When it's your job to find cohesive, nuanced truth and someone calls that very concept "devisive" or "political," you Keep Doing Your Job.
