meta about organisations on the fedi

If you're an organisation that wants to participate on the fediverse, you really need to be running your own Mastodon instance.

Most of the Mastodon infrastructure right now is being run by individuals or small groups, for the community.

Trying to put your "official account" on community infrastructure is extremely rude.

fedi is queer as fuck. let’s prove it

I’m already seeing devopsy type tech dudes posting about how to ‘scale mastodon’ and it’s depressing to say the least

politics

@TinaThePerson I feel like that's kind of missing the forest for the trees, though. While the value of a vote isn't zero, it's still relatively inconsequential in the bigger picture, and a lot more good can be achieved by organizing things ourselves collectively, also outside of the fediverse. Aren't the experiences that you're describing proof that that works?

facebook, decentralisatie

@RudyBouma@mastodon.social Mja.

obligatory addition to CW meta

Content warnings are subject lines, newspaper verticals, essay titles, forum thread titles. Lots of people will add +/-/~ to a CW to specify tone.

I have either used or clicked on all of these at one point or another. It didn't actually get in the way of anything.

(mental health, -) or (mh -)
(LocalPol, +)
(that wizard TERF insisting she's not owned while withering into a corn cob)
(misogyny, handled surprisingly well!)
(gross thing my cat did today)
(venting, no advice pls)

IMPORTANT NOTE: My personal policy on this is that people talking about experiences of oppression NOT THEIR OWN should use a CW. This is specifically and ONLY for the benefit of the people whose experiences are being discussed.

Ex: I think it's grody for me, as a white person, to hide a Black person's post about antiblackness behind a CW. It isn't my job to shape how people participate in that conversation. If I post something myself about antiblackness, I will CW to err on the side of giving Black people control over how they engage.

I frequently CW posts about my own experiences anyway, but that's still out of courtesy to others who share the experience more than consideration for those protected from it by privilege. Because tbh, fuck em :flow:

#FediTips

@eloy I requested it like... two days ago? And it took under a day I think

yes i know i was supposed to do this thing and in my defense, yesterday, at one point i thought about doing the thing
The last couple of days have taught me that out of all the people in the world, there are some people that I know, and some people I don't know. I think it is likely that the latter group is larger.

Mastodon pessimism, GoToSocial

The more I see of Masto development the more pessmistic I get about its future. This is why I am supporting GoToSocial development monthly, like we CANNOT hang the entire future of ActivityPub-driven microblogging on Mastodon, not after fucking exhausting years of Gargron's asshattery and his determination to make Mastodon into another popularity- and engagement-driven platform.

@solene That depends - what will the book be about, and what's the intended audience? I'm a big fan of (the ideas behind) NixOS personally, but it's also still not in a place where I could recommend it universally, it'd depend a lot on the context.

Please don’t feel bad for switching instances, or seeking one that is a better fit. An instance is also a community, you want to be in comfortable company. Also the values and vibes will matter when it comes to moderation & safety.

When I first joined yrs ago I tried at least half a dozen instances, until I found the right ones for me. I now post on two instances. Take your time exploring the fediverse. Actually you don’t need to join an instance, most of mastodon ones will let you peek into their local TL from their front page, so you’ll have an idea before you go in.

Well this approach to user data protection is... novel:

"If you would like to remove all personal data from [our site], simply log back in and remove or replace any personal information with fictitious data."

From the folks at Tax Act dot com.

Imagine *not* trying to craft a #hottake that will stir people up and get you them clicks.

Imagine #vulnerability and genuine human connection.

@AudreyJune The trajectory is certainly easy to plot :D

@discordiankitty@mastodon.me.uk I wouldn't worry too much about overwhelming a small server, to be honest, as long as your toots are generally in line with the vibe there. Some topic-specific servers ask to put other topics under a CW, but many also don't, I think.

And you could always just ask the admin if you're unsure :) Most admins are very approachable on here

laughing at the birdsite

@AudreyJune (Well, technically Twitter could still survive by being sold for pennies on the dollar fast enough that people haven't emotionally detached from the platform yet, Yahoo-style. But with how stubborn Musk is, I don't really see that happening...)

laughing at the birdsite

@AudreyJune Ah, but the difference there is that they're run into the ground by disinterested rich folks with more money than sense, and who mainly need a place to stash their debts. Elon probably genuinely *cares*, but still doesn't really have any sense, and that makes it much more explosive! :p

If nothing else, I guess we get some once-in-a-lifetime entertainment out of something that was doomed to fail.
