Starting tonight, every week I will be limiting the biggest instance that is not yet limited or blocked. This means existing connections will remain available but new ones are blocked. This policy will remain in place until the big instances get some actually good moderation or until I get bored.

If you are on an instance that is limited or likely to be limited soon, I will probably not accept your follow request. I recommend finding another instance that is community-scale, not world-scale.

And yet again, the greatest threat to the Fediverse isn't Meta - but the people doing their work for them and actively making room for them by "giving them a chance", "we should have a calm conversation about this", etc.

You're actively complicit in this. Instead of listening to the many marginalized folks sounding the alarm, fearing for the continued existence and safety of their communities... you choose to give the "benefit of the doubt" to a corporation with a decade+ track record of exploitation, consent violations, and literal genocide(!).

You care more about "growth", about some superficial appearance of neutrality and rationality, about recognition by a 'prestigious' tech corp, than you do about the safety of vulnerable folks in your community.

You chose to trust a demonstrably dishonest corporation instead of your fellow community members.

And while you might think that this is 'just being rational' or 'not a big deal', it's extremely clear to everybody else what choice you've made, and that people cannot depend on you for their safety.

This has consequences, and if you wonder why people stop trusting you or being patient with you, this is why.

And all of this applies much more broadly than just the current Facebook/fedi situation, because this happens *all the time* in politics, with (especially privileged) people defending oppressive and violent institutions, often just to avoid their own discomfort.

You are complicit. You chose to be a part of the problem. You're not neutral - you picked a side, like it or not.

If they want to cozy up to Meta despite decades of Facebook/Meta/Other big tech companies facilitating the erosion of countless people's safety on a global scale on one hand, and algorithming the most dangerous and harmful voices around into rooms together to radicalise themselves towards actual murder then so be it. It's a them problem now

It is pretty frustrating to see folks' credulity and craving for attention/importance being exploited in real time.

This whole 'meet with some admins and make them sign NDAs' thing reminds me very much of union busting tactics. You (megacorp) are picking out the chosen few who crave love from daddy corporation, and convincing them selling out is the best thing to do for their community. It immediately creates division and identifies weak points for strategic exploitation later on.

It's like, super transparent. Maybe we should be looking to anti union busting techniques to help us out here.

How do unions successfully deal with corpos trying to have closed-doors meetings with select community leaders?

Zero surprise that the prominent fedi people meeting with Facebook/Meta under NDA all seem to be the usual white tech dudes with poorly-moderated instances that have disregarded warnings from the community about scale for a long time

Heard some rumblings about Meta having NDA'd meetings with some fedi admins.

GoToSocial will investigate automated blocking of Meta instances, as soon as we know more about what they're planning and what their software looks like.

Fuck Meta, they've caused more than enough harm elsewhere without wading into this place too; and fuck folks who are meeting with them in secret instead of simply and unambiguously telling them to fuck off.

Don't let those pieces of shit get a foothold here.
