finally doing some more Culture & Society (uni course) writing, might have to edit my anti-techbro/solutionism rant a bit later, but good shit

wtf i clicked through to a post again and they're running gotosocial

ive been told to stop referring to merriam webbster as "the dictionary girly"

I truly do not know how it is possible to address the problem of needing to allow anyone to scrape your posts. you can't know what Algo providers the ppl you might want to see you use, and if you block them (if that's possible) you're effectively invisible from them.

Worse, there are actually two layers that make it impossible to control who can see you - posts are aggregated by gigantic scrapers and then feed generators subscribe to those. you might not even know which scraper the Algo gets posts from.

Here we can ban Nazi instances because they are a recognizable entity, registering a domain is too expensive for mass instance creation, authorized fetch is possible to do, and instances batch the problem instead of needing to do it person by person.

I dont see how you could stop someone from, say, making an algorithmic feed with every self-identifying trans person and then getting flooded by Nazis that can make as many DIDs as they want and you actually cannot lock down your profile.

what of the tv show Lost became lost media would that be fucked up or what

So my ES Modules post has ended up on HN (oh no) and it's very clear that, as usual, the HN commenters are completely unfamiliar with the history of the thing they're opining on

my calendar shortened "result section deadline" to "result section deadl" with the last l looking more like a !

and yea...

@haskal I think both types of opensource projects should exist.

If I just write some neat one-off script to do a thing, I don't think I should have to support it beyond what I need from it. I'll just open source it to give others who want similar things an easier starting point.

If I build an app or a library that I actually want other people to use, it is my responsibility to make sure it's as accessible as it can be

on bad necrocomputing takes

Sometimes I see takes like "computers used to be able to do the same job using way less resources, software is shit nowadays"

And I can only wonder whether they've ever developed software back when real-time compositing was unaffordably expensive, and so was proper process isolation, and a million other 'modern conveniences' that make software, y'know, not suck

guess i'll do a timed mute till it's off my timeline....

Another week, another hip "twice as fast as React" library where the fine print is that it doesn't handle edgecases

How to draw foxes! Tip no. 1:
Foxes are just shapes.

Remote Coke Execution (RCE)

This week really needs another reminder that ‘respect for the dead’ is demanded by the oppressor, but not given in return. To not speak ill is another form of ‘being nice’, of decorum imposed by a white supremacist society.

Celebrating the death of evil men is a form of punching up, a final form of accountability that they eluded in life, and a speaking out against which their privileged position can no longer protect them.

Rejoice in their passing. The blood on their hands demands it.
