To make this very clear: user/visitor consent is only needed for data typically going to 3rd parties. All cookie laws, including GDPR and CCPA, allow essential first-party cookies to be exempt from collecting user consent before performing their actions. So the simple, non-persistent session cookie on your site DOES NOT need a consent popup AT ALL. Regardless of what the ad/tracker "industry" tries to insinuate.

Here is a must-read post from children's author Maggie Tokuda-Hall on how Scholastic offered to distribute her book — all she had to do was remove all mention of racism.

Sure, they're banning books in Tennessee and Texas. But it's not just the books that get published and then banned from the library. It's all the books that don't get published in the first place.

Those banning books know publishers like Scholastic pull this cowardly bullshit. It's their game plan.

Oh, and also, fuck off with the patronising "lawl, don't you know the NSA monitors you anyway?!" that seems rife among people from infosec circles.

People KNOW this. Just because some three or four letter agency is hard to fight against doesn't mean that the objection against the next tech bro wanting to invisibly index our data is invalid.

Informed, enthusiastic consent, revocable. Or get the fuck out.

How about instead of us all having to play a game of bigot whack-a-mole that none of us even wanted to play each nasty little mole only had to be hit once and the trusted people around you also score a point for it? This place could be way more chill, and yet..

Why is content moderation in a *decentralised social network* still centralised? It's been 6 years of Mastodon already, this should have happened from the start?? Decentralised content moderation should certainly be here and with all the kinks ironed out by now.
We should be pooling eachother's labour towards healthy communities and not having to re-do the same work over and over again per instance. Exhausting and unnecessary.

wish we could condense a bunch of these boring scenes into a montage that leads into character growth or something, this kinda sucks to just live through
