stubbornly struggling to read all the text on my monitors before realizing I should really just put on my glasses..

i wonder what activitypub implementations do with a status that boosts itself

(for reference, a normal (self-)boost is two different events, one post and one boost that refers to that post)

really gotta get some work done today (and send invoices after)

People who are working to help the endangered arctic fox, when asked why it's going so well: "We're working with Finland and Norway so we can get a more complete picture, because foxes don't care about borders."

Good morning!

We just made the third release candidate for GoToSocial v0.6.0. As with the previous release candidate, this just fixes up a couple issues and bugs that we found while testing.

Barring any showstoppers, this will probably be the final release candidate before the actual release. Please let us know on github or matrix if you see any weirdness introduced by v0.6.0-rc3 compared to the previous release, v0.5.2.

You can download the release candidate from here: https://github.com/superseriousbusiness/gotosocial/releases/tag/v0.6.0-rc3

If you're updating to rc3 from one of the previous release candidates, you don't need to do anything special.

If you're updating from 0.5.2 or below, please read the notes for the first release candidate: https://gts.superseriousbusiness.org/@gotosocial/statuses/01GK1CT0R20F2QF8VFE1SKNNTW

Thank you! Have a good weekend!

interpersonal red flags, abuser talk

Of course, someone *saying* they are dedicated to truth & principles over ego is not enough--abusers have that kind of talk down pat too, and often talk a mean game. It's a necessary condition, not a sufficient one, to profess a dedication to truth and a code that is consistent across the self and other, in-group and out-group, and the real test comes in how they act over time, especially in the harder cases when their friends, their reputation, their group are on the line.

That said, if someone starts *off the bat* saying essentially that truth and consistency mean nothing to them with statements like the below, they are telling me who they are and I tend to believe them. The ones whose dediction to truth was a smokescreen are likely to resort to this rhetoric sooner or later, too.

- "I'm an ally/leftist/antiracist/anticolonialist, which justifies what I did."
- "I am marginalized, which itself rebuts the credible allegation."
- "I do so much good work, cut me some slack."
- "I have good intentions, everyone is overreacting."
- "If you discredit me it hurts the movement."

All of it deflection, not an honest reckoning with what actually happened. All some variation of "I am too special to be held accountable." Just no.

look, I know some people who I’m pretty sure are cis who use Nix

didn't use spotify enough this year to get a spotify wrapped so it just sent me a message like "have you heard of music? check out a song sometime. cheers"

tip for fedi admins: the Cloud is very expensive. stay away from services that pay by use, because they can balloon *very* quickly and suddenly you have a large bill to pay

PSA: Always block the base domain!

#FediTip for instance admins: On #Mastodon you can #FediBlock the base domain to block its subdomains as well.

For instance, blocking dumpsterfire.social will work for the subdomains pl.dumpsterfire.social, ak.dumpsterfire.social and any other subdomain they might spin up in the future.

This works even if dumpsterfire.social itself is not a federated instance and doesn't show up as a choice in search. Simply click the "Add new domain block" button in the upper right of the federation menu, enter dumpsterfire.social and do your thing.

Alternately you can search first and then click on the add new block button to both verify the domain and auto-populate the domain name field.

Particularly for dumpster fires that only have instances on subdomains, this gives you peace of mind and saves you the labor of tracking down new subdomains. I have seen instances use wildcard asterisks * for blocks, which do NOT work at least on mainline Mastodon/Hometown and should be replaced by base domain blocks.

think I got some pretty decent UX for timeline gap filling, just needs a bit more work
