Reacher is a fun show and all but it's way funnier when you add the c in front so it's creacher

You might not be surprised to learn that I support fediblocking moth.social.

Don't support venture capital-backed anything for the fedi. They're here to destroy it, like they've destroyed everything else.

dependencies, capitalism

I frequently talk about how the ideal dependency is one that does precisely one well-defined thing, rarely needs any maintenance, has no room for scope creep (because it only does exactly one thing), and that is so straightforward and unremarkable that you almost forget you're using it.

Explaining this to people is already exhausting, because this is a topic with a lot of misinformation and wrong assumptions floating around it.

But what *really* worries me is that even if everybody were to accept this on an 'intellectual level' overnight, it likely still isn't going to happen - because capitalist incentives work against it.

Why? Because you won't get millions of VC or acquisition money for something unremarkable that Just Works and needs no marketing copy.

Wrapping up a lot of loose ends today. Finally fixed my lighter, if anybody needs anything burning x

@daniel @astrid Reminds me of the Soylent guy bragging about going off the grid, by outsourcing everything that used the grid arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/0

@t54r4n1 it really hasn't? there's been recent developments in scrapers using client api's on other servers, making them impossible to block without blockimg that entire server. Also Mastodon 4.x exposes a lot of the client api usable for scraping by default now, even with authorized fetch

@vaguelyweird I'm really happy with my self-hosted code-server for that, but that's also not trivial in setup and maintenance..

@doot@glitterkitten.co.uk @tobi right, as it's a separate service there might be *some* possibilities still, but we'll burn that bridge when we get there

@doot@glitterkitten.co.uk @tobi im intermittently working on a new Mastodon frontend that could prevent some of this, allowing 4.x to disable unauthenticated api while still having working static pages for profiles/threads. Needs more work though, and in your case would also need integration with managed hosting

seems to struggle a lot getting the overview for gargron, so maybe that's a way to overload it :")

it doesn't seem able to list any toots from me, but did autocomplete my username with avatar, so they have a scraped user database for sure.
also no known way to even opt-out, not that that'd be enough. shit like this needs actual consent through opt-in

I wish them all the best whatever they are doing now, and wish for all of us still here to do the best that we can to make this a sincerely liberated social space and not just a bunch of nerdy flag waving hashtags-in-bio losers 2/2

Using this #FollowFriday to remember the friends we've lost from this space.
Deni, Swampy, Haf, Dumi, Ikora, everyone that stayed gone after PV closed or had to make themselves tiny and quiet elsewhere in this network; the ghosts of others I regularly stumble across in replies to old toots, and the people that are just about hanging on despite the shit they regularly face here. 1/2
