@ff0000 oh wow, TIL about developer.mozilla.org/en-US/do, which is actually something i considered implementing myself though localstorage communication a while ago. Really quite useful for a (mastodon) webapp where people might duplicate the tab, and then you can still limit timeline syncing requests to one of them

I truly do not know how it is possible to address the problem of needing to allow anyone to scrape your posts. you can't know what Algo providers the ppl you might want to see you use, and if you block them (if that's possible) you're effectively invisible from them.

Worse, there are actually two layers that make it impossible to control who can see you - posts are aggregated by gigantic scrapers and then feed generators subscribe to those. you might not even know which scraper the Algo gets posts from.

Here we can ban Nazi instances because they are a recognizable entity, registering a domain is too expensive for mass instance creation, authorized fetch is possible to do, and instances batch the problem instead of needing to do it person by person.

I dont see how you could stop someone from, say, making an algorithmic feed with every self-identifying trans person and then getting flooded by Nazis that can make as many DIDs as they want and you actually cannot lock down your profile.

what of the tv show Lost became lost media would that be fucked up or what

So my ES Modules post has ended up on HN (oh no) and it's very clear that, as usual, the HN commenters are completely unfamiliar with the history of the thing they're opining on

my calendar shortened "result section deadline" to "result section deadl" with the last l looking more like a !

and yea...

a brief summary of the discussion points because I can't help myself, 1/?

- A announces his intentions to buy a fanny pack; B is skeptical
- A talks about how much he liked it while on holiday to keep his belongings safe, they briefly discuss how much protection and utility various types of straps actually offer, B sees the advantages but thinks it looks goofy

I can't stop thinking about that time we sat across from two gym dudes on the train who we witnessed, for the entire hour+ duration of the trip, intensely discussing whether to get a fanny pack in "Black" or "Eukalyptus" and what the fashion implications of it were and whether it would help him get noticed by girls in a depth that I could not adequately convey within any character limit

@wmd it's a techbro-ism from terms like internationalization getting shortened to i18n, to much dismay from most actual accessibility advocates I've seen

@haskal I think both types of opensource projects should exist.

If I just write some neat one-off script to do a thing, I don't think I should have to support it beyond what I need from it. I'll just open source it to give others who want similar things an easier starting point.

If I build an app or a library that I actually want other people to use, it is my responsibility to make sure it's as accessible as it can be

uni / group work

@futurebird @welshpixie I'm more on the adhd side of things, where group work *can* help by providing more outside motivation to keep me on track instead of postponing everything to the deadline, but there are also numerous cases where I would've much preferred to do the same assignment on my own. The social dynamics on finding your own group members when you aren't randomly assigned are also horrible
