Question for any autistic people:

When you were in middle school and high school...

a. Did anything teachers did give you particular difficulty?
b. Did you have any teachers who were particularly helpful? In what ways?
c. How did you feel about "group work" ?

#autism #actuallyautistic

@futurebird a) Expect everyone to be able to absorb and retain information from books (in terms of ability to learn in that way, regardless of literacy level)
b) Teachers who did more 'learn by doing'
c) Yuck, especially with added introvertedenss and anxiety

@welshpixie

I only have a few replies but I suspect my instincts about group work are correct. It's an extra hurdle for some students.

Unfortunately, group work is very effective for a large proportion of students. So, in teacher professional development classes it's always "make them do more group work!"

I wonder if offering the option of either working in a group or independently could work in some cases.

@futurebird @welshpixie I'm more on the adhd side of things, where group work *can* help by providing more outside motivation to keep me on track instead of postponing everything to the deadline, but there are also numerous cases where I would've much preferred to do the same assignment on my own. The social dynamics on finding your own group members when you aren't randomly assigned are also horrible

@f0x @futurebird Oh, yes, 'figure out groups amongst yourselves' was HUGE anxiety.
