This whole fediverse trend of responding to ideas about improving with moderation with "well just make a personal block list, there you go"
really need to die.
Personal filters and block lists are not "moderation" they aren't an affirmation of shared community values, they can't replace moderation to effectively stem the flow of hate content.
They don't meet the need.
If you don't have this need that is fine. There are places you can go. But lots of people do. jeeeeez
i think i saw a report of how bumblebees like to play with balls + the newest #SillyCuratorPrompts lead to this cute fuzzy #Snailify bumblebee
I’ve seen this graphic now and then on that bird site and it intrigued me, being of Irish descent and all. A more well-researched article on the subject can be found here… https://earthandstarryheaven.com/2015/05/13/irish-werewolves/
In a couple of different places on Mastodon this week I’ve seen people saying something to the effect of “what does visible alt text matter, it’s for screen readers.”
Here are just a few scenarios why people might want to view alt text visually:
1. “I made the post and I want to double check the alt text I wrote.”
2. “I did not make the post but I want to learn how other people write alt text so I can write better descriptions.”
3. “I’m having trouble making sense of the image but I think a written description would help.”
4. “My vision is enough to read text at my preferred font size but not in a tiny screenshot with jpeg compression.”
5. “This is what works best for me because of reasons I don’t want to get into.”
Accessibility is for everyone. Try not to make assumptions.
meta, subtoot, activism/leftism
The way that the jorts.horse admin is posting right now, that's how abusers behave.
- Reducing a combination of problems/factors to a single event, pretending that that's the only thing that happened, and complaining about how unreasonable the response would be to that strawman
- Strategically not mentioning (or responding to) the very legitimate criticisms that they've received, cherrypicking only the emotionally-charged comments that they feel they can ridicule and trivialize
- Treating the whole thing as a joke, and painting "people getting upset" as a justification of why they were right all along not to take it seriously
- Using their marginalized status as a shield from criticism about an entirely unrelated thing
- Setting themselves up as the gatekeeper, declaring that they do not *personally* see the value in something and therefore nobody should be expected to treat it respectfully
- Making a non-apology, claiming they've told them to knock it off, but never *actually* condemning the problematic behaviour in question
Again, this is abuser behaviour, disguised as shitposting. And this is far from an isolated incident - this sort of thing is uncomfortably widespread in leftist and activist circles. Learn to recognize the patterns and act against them.

Gonna try to do a few of these, so I'll make it a thread!

If you're an instance admin/mod struggling to keep up with the fediblock tag, @fediblock is a 'curated' version that filters through the trolling/misuse of the tag and repeat entries, and only boosts the actual proper fediblock content. :)
Don't short-charge the people in your circles who really matter, who you can laugh with, cry with, learn from, and have incredibly difficult, vulnerable, heartfelt talks with. Leave your time and energy for them.
Most of all, spare energy and passion for yourself. Your time and strength are not for random disingenuous people to claim, those who have already shown an unwillingness to learn or change. Be kind to yourself.
So, a bit of a "power of the fediverse" moment here.
My quote toot is a quote toot of a lemmy post I made. Lemmy is basically "federated reddit". In the post I was asking the lemmy community and developers about content discovery options on the platform. Thanks to the power of federation, I asked the question from an account on my lemmy instance, to a lemmy group hosted on a different lemmy instance. Lots of interesting conversation has come from it.
But what's really fascinating is that the post you see in my quote toot is that conversation on lemmy. And if you were to reply to it from mastodon or calckey or the like, your post would appear as a reply in the lemmy group, whilst looking like a regular conversation to you.
That's federation. That's the future.
