like hand to God?
I have to laugh!
anytime i try to think about it, i start cracking the fuck up.
like babes, i live in an antiblack world, with heavy doses of white supremacy.
I navigate both in the hellhole that is the normie world and every subculture I've been a part of: goth, punk, witchcraft, straight edge, straight edge veg, BDSM/kink, polyamory, fat liberation or positivity, books.
I'm far from new to this, I'm true to this!
when it comes to masto, i don't think it's coincidental that these cries to "keep mastodon weird!" are cropping up at the same time new and old PoC users describe their experiences with racism.
specifically, Black masto users describing their experiences with antiblackness
on a visceral level it's offensive, but also heinously high school. the idea that if you fiercely gatekeep who is allowed in and scare away those who you assume "wouldn't make a good fit" then you create a hermetic seal
In the few weeks since I've returned to both Tumblr and Mastodon (following the slow death of the bird app), both of my timelines have been a veritable tapestry of what I tend to call the "weaponization of white weirdness"
specifically the fear of white folks who dominate specific subcultural spaces that the inclusion of more people who weren't already part of a subculture will somehow alter the cultural aesthetics, mores, etc
very "there goes the neighborhood" syndrome
Normalize Black people coming to this app being safe to speak their minds. What we bring up might abut internal discomfort and biases that you might hold. That is not the minoritized person’s responsibility, though, to educate you, coddle you, to do the work for you. It is your responsibility to not create yet another space where Black people are marginalized or silenced.
I’ve been calculated about bringing this up and now is the time.💖✊🏽
